MG MGF Technical - Blower motor fan problems

The demister (blower) motor fan on my Mk1 MGF is only working on seetings III and IV - is it the switch or motor?
P Hobson

Most probably the resistor pack - a common prob usually on position 1 & 2. Don't know the cost of new part but would think it is in the region of Ģ30 - your local X Part distributor or Rimmer Bros should be able to supply one.

Have a look at Tony Green's excellent site http://apttony.co.uk/ under the heater resistor fan pack section for easy to follows instructions.

I have just replaced mine the part you need is JGM100060 and is Ģ27.

You will notice the new pack has the resistor wires coated with some white stuff that hopefully improves its lifespan.

Or you could try the cheap repair & make your own coils from resistance wire & solder these in place.

(worked for me!)

Jon,

I haven't been on here for a while, so I missed this thread, but feel the need to make a correction here.

My website is not "Tony Green's Bullet" but "Tony's Green Bullet" as in BRG. LOL

It's a pretty crumpy name, I know, but when I started building the site I couldn't think of anything more appropiate, and it just stuck!

As electronics is much cheaper than mechanics these days it makes me wonder why no supplier has made a simple PWM for the fan speed. Mine home-made (and a few others) have been in good trouble-free use for years now.

Carl,
If I need to ask what it looks like and how you did it, does that mean it is too complicated to make? I have only lost position 1 at the moment! Do you have a website or other instructions? Thanks,
Charles

I thought the electronic versions sufferred from harmonics ?

There should be a schematic on Dieterīs site. Built mine "dead bug style" on a solid copper PCB.
The resonances are only few and far apart. And also in a very limited band of revīs. So easily avoided if using the original 4-stepped switch. Just avoid the revs that makes the electric motor "sing" by changing the preset resistors. A fully variable by potentiometer will give some resonance problems as I detected too late.....
