replaced fuse (with c/d switched off..face off removed) with the drivers door still in open position the lights came on for about 3-4 seconds then fuse blew again.

Gerry, have you registered yet? If not, do so asap and look in archive search for 'fuse 12' and you will find several hits.

A regular problem area is the wiring loom where it enters the boot by the left hinge. There is a Y joint and wires often break inside the wrapping.

The possible connection to your problen is the connections through the boot/lock for security system.

I had the same symptoms last summer, dealer patched the loom in the boot - no more problems.

Yes, I had this exact problem... no clock!

Alarm intermittantly going off. :(

I temporary solved (and found) the problem by putting a brake light bulb in place of the fuse (a head light bulb would be better), so when the fuse would normally have blown, the light shines nice and BRIGHT! The disadvantage, when the stereo was played 'load'! the light would also brighten to the volume of music.
It can be found by opening/ shutting the boot. The bulb could then be seen to go to full brightness. I actually soldered the bulb, via wires, to an already blown fuse.

But, the real answer is yes, it will be the wiring loom near the boot, to the left as you look in it. Cut back the plsatic covering and it will be really obvious what wires to re-connect/ tape up.

If the problem is not in the boot loom (most likely) then check out the rear of the CD Radio unit. Sometimes the wires get congested at the back and chafe through on the metal work. Easiest way to check is to remove the central air vent above the CD unit and then you can look down at the back of the unit without having to remove it. Just prise out the bottom of the air vent with a flat, but not sharp, blade.

You should be able just to pull the bottom of the vent with your fingers.

I must be getting weak as I need a lever to get the vent out or perhaps the older cars had a tighter fit.

My car is a P reg, perhaps the car isn't the bit getting old ;-)
To be fair I have the 'wooden' trim which adds a little extra surface to pull against.

Sometimes I feel like I'm having a fit and blowing a fuse!

well i found the cut thanks to your good selves . it was the black and the geeen/black that ran in the flex sleeve alongside the protected plastic coil ( fixed to the bent part of the hinge ....repaied the cable ..felt really great...fitted new fuse and BANG...fuse blew again. stripped it back out wires ok.. color codes match..no earthing . now went to the face vent lifted out ok( p plate reg whatever year that was) could not see any trapped wires .
however decided to lock door and go back to work for a cuppa and the locks now make a funny sound almost like multi clicking noise ( did not do this before)
any more suggestions ...i know you can do it...gerry

Are you sure you didn't miss a cheeky purple cable?

will
i will go back and check but at the point where it was cut there are only two cables in the flexy protector , or am i at the wrong place and have poss two areas of damage???? gerry

Was the cheeky purple chappie on mine that caused most problems.

I wish I was as clever as those people who always remember the url for the piccies that show the problem - there is one somewhere that shows the problem area of the loom. Open boot lid, remove grill and look in engine compartment on left side where main loom comes through car. Sorry, wish I had a piccie.

I had the same problem with two areas of damage - try strippping away the flex higher up to the first tie wrap (on the boot lid)
