MG MGF Technical - Boo Hoo MOT Blues

Oeer

The Loud F'er just about got it's MOT!

but a few things were noticed.
the ball joints getting a bit worn!
one on the front and more disconcerning
the rear uppers!
Any clues as how to deal with these?

also and more worrying is a coolant leak at the front!

Typically as you cant see anyting mechanical on these cars I suppose it's going to be a "get out and get under" exercise in getting dripped on to locate the leak ! AAAGGGGG

Not done many miles like this, literally only 6! I am all too aware of K series dislike of getting over heated!

Neil

Neil,

Leek from the front sounds like radiator.

I got my 7 year MOT tomorrow up at techspeed.

Ah, another time traveller!
Dr. Who

Could be radiator, could be radiator bleed screw, could be hose clip.

Yeah and all of it involves grovelling around under a leaky rad in the middle of winter!!!!

I'll leave the heater on in the garage for an hour or so first!!

Neil

Arr yes a garage. Us city boys dream of a garage. :-)

Ya big softy!

Last month I was out lying on the ground under the F covered in 4 inches of hailstones!!!
Bob Millar

Yes and we know that it's not cold in Scotland unless it's snowing indoors.

It's just a case of motivation, I've been under more cars in more snow that I care to remember
Neil

Had my 8 year MOT yesterday - no problems at all. Done 82K miles, still on original CAT as well. Plus I've done 40K since my HGF.

Sadly this will be the last couple of months of *F* ownership ... the MY04 S2000 arrives in May. I can't wait ...

Gaz, noticed in archive threads a Gaz based in Worcester Park - if that was you where do/did you get your MOT/servicing done? Mine's due in a week & I work in Worcester Park...

cheers

It's a dead radiator folks complete with leaky hole!!

and a whole load of corrosion under there!!

OK where's the best place to get a rad for one of these f's??
Neil

Paul,

I used to live in WorcesterPark ... I always had my MOT done by the dealer in Hampton as it was due at the same time as my yearly service so it was convenient. I don't really know of any suitable garage locally.

I'd like to recommend the dealer in Hampton - in the early years of *F* ownership they were great but over the last two years the general customer service in the service dept. has deteriorated significantly.

Cheers Gaz, I've only had the car for 6 months and had B&G service it when I bought it. Bit of a trek to Baldock so will chance my luck with a local MOT station. Congrats on the S2000 by the way.

Neil,

I agree with Gaz that the garage in Hampton has gone off the boil in the last couple of years on the customer care front and suspect this is due to the British Leyland management taking over from BMW in Longbridge!

However the service still seems first rate and honest to me. We bought our F from them 6 years ago and I was worried that as the car got older they would be looking for all sorts of things to replace at considerable expense to me and as "encouragement" to trade in for a TF.

This has not happened - they still service with all the enthusiasm and speed that they did when the F was new and costs are reasonable with no nasty extra "essential" repairs.

You pay main dealer prices but this seems a reasonable exchange for not being ripped off!

Cheers

Patrick
