MG MGF Technical - Brake Pads-Rear

I've checked on my Rave disc to renew my rear brake pads. It says to use tool 18G 1596 to screw piston into caliper. Do I need this tool or can I use something else?

You can use a big blunt screwdriver but I would go to a motor factor and buy a Draper universal wind-back tool for around £10 (or less).

Hi Ron,

Whilst you're at it, clean up around where the handbrake lever goes into the caliper body, and try to work some lubricant in. Ingress of salt & water can cause the internal mechanisms to seize, leading to the unwelcome purchase of a new caliper.

i fitted new rear pads only yesterday & used a pair of pointy pliers they done the job with ease dont forget to wind the piston clockwise. only took about 45min all
in.

Hi Ron,

The method I've found the most effective is to use a G-clamp and screw the piston back into the caliper, it allows you to apply pressure in a controlled manner. You will need to slack off the bleed nipple and collect any spilt fluid with a rag. Pushing the piston right back means it's a doddle to get the new pads in.

I've also just uprated to grooved BERTS rear discs and am very satisifed with the result. Due to the 45/55 weight distribution on the F the rear brakes do more work than they would do on a front drive motor and thankfully discs and pads are cheap for the F.

If you don't have a G-clamp then the wind back tool may be a good bet.

Good luck, Russ.

I used a blunt edge of an old metal file to screw the piston back into the caliper body. No problem.

So no, you don't really need the special tool Ron :o)
