MG MGF Technical - Broken gearknob linkage

Just as I was telling people how reliable my 99 VVC F has been over the 3 years I've owned it....

Pulling away from lights tonight, went to change up to 2nd and... WHACK! back came the gearstick against the gate. Where's second gone?

For fear of embarrassment and losing too much speed, I managed to find 3rd, but now I cannot get the gearbox out of 3rd. Managed to struggle home though. The gearstick now flops around front to back. I've taken the gear gaiter out, and not knowing what it should have looked like uploaded a couple of photos here: http://www.icdphotos.com/album/813692

How easily accessible is the gear linkage to a novice mechanic, or am I better off taking it down to local MGR dealer?

Appreciate some guidance, Tony

check the cables at the gearbox end, likely to be a disconected cable or broken.
good luck

Hi.

Perhaps a snapped gearbox cable?

For that check Rob Bell's Website.

Good luck.

Tony, bad news that, but not the end of the world I wouldn't think.

I suspect Mike is right here, last time I was at Techspeed they were showing me the underside of the car and pointed out the gear linkage at the back. Apparently it's not uncommon for this to become disconnected.

The best place to start IMO

Guys, sincere thanks for the suggestions, which have helped me to grab the car back from MGR.

They quoted me £650 to replace what they believe to be a snapped cable, although they "cannot tell for sure until they start taking the car apart".

In fading light tonight, I've squirmed under the back to take more pictures on http://www.icdphotos.com/album/813692

IMG_1823 has annotation to help bearing, but I couldn't get any closer to the top of the two suspect cables in the time and light I had tonight.

Beech Hill Garages have quoted me a much more affordable amount, and another suggestion has been to have a slick-shift fitted at the same time as having whatever this issue is, fixed. TechSpeed are getting back to me tomorrow. Small issue of getting the car to them (Reading>Leamington Spa) to overcome!

F camped out in garage again, and what with all this sunny weather at the moment! :-(

The top most photo on Dieter's site is the selector that TechSpeed pointed out to me as a common failure, apparently the heat from the exhaust or cat causes it to warp and pop off, should be able to pop it back on again if it is this.
