MG MGF Technical - build quality or broken?

I've recently noticed the instrument binnacle (is that the right term?) is loose and seems to be detached at the back (where the front is the bit closest to the driver.

It seems to be pivoting at the front where it joins the dash. Is there some sort of clip at the back?

Thanks

Chris

Chris,

Do yo mean the Speedo and rev Counter instrument panel or the Clock and Oil Temp panel.

Either way, the clock and oil Temp panel is held in by clips that run down both sides of the panel, the clips sit in hollows in the framework and the panel has pegs which push into the clips to fix in place.

The Speedo panel has a surround which is held in place by cross head screws and behind the surround the instrument panel itself is held to the frame also by screws.

It could be that a screw is missing or a clip is not positioned correctly.

You can gain access to the Oil and Clock panel by gently prising out the air vent above the gauges, the other requires removal of the surround screws.

both are simple jobs to fix.

Or do you mean the binnacle itself, as in the large domed structure on top of the dash that houses the speedo instrument pack?

yes that's the one, the large domed plastic bit...

That would be this then?

my binnacle has several small plastic clips where it joins the rest of the dash that have broken. It only causes a slight squeek on occasions, so I have not been too concerned. If you find a solution, I would be interested to hear about it.

So what causes it to break away then, seems strange that this part would come away from its mountings as there should not be any pressure excerted upon it, any ideas.
Chris

After I had a little incident with a kerb at a not inconsiderable speed, when I got the car back from the garage (most left side suspension replaced) then I too noticed the binacle being lose at the point closest to the windscreen. If you applied pressure to it then you could move it away and see that a small plastic location had borken on the dash board itself and required a brand new dashboard!
Have you had any incidents in it??

I did have a pillock pull out on me on a roundabout a couple of years ago, haven't noticed it until recently, although that doesn't mean much. I'll have a butchers this weekend.

Oh and some twat threw something at the car whilst I was driving the other day... consequence is a nasty double-dink in the bonnet... me is not happy!! :-(
