MG MGF Technical - Cam Belt

I have a 1998 MPI F and have been quoted £120 to supply and fit a new cam belt. This is from a local garage who I have used for various cars and MOT's but they have never worked on my F. They did pass it for its MOT on Saturday. Is this a fair price as reading some of the threads here I am a bit unsure if it is too cheap
Thanks Bill

Cam belt cost is mostly labour, and you can't skimp anywhere, so I would say go for it.

Bill,

I'm just back from Techspeed who charged £390 for the 5year inc. cam belt change on my 1998 Mpi. From memory, MGFC are about £500 but they also change additional items such as the water pump etc. It really depends on what else they are doing/replacing, after all the cam belt itself is about £20.

Cheers

Hmm...

Gullible route - point out that this seems a tad cheap, and are they sure they actually understand the job.

Sneaky route - get them to do it, and then take the car to an MGR dealer/trusted independant and ask them if the job's been done properly.

Of course, the £500 or so is for the full 5yr service, which involves quite a bit more than just the cam belt. Do you not need the rest of this to be done at the same time? Possibly £120 is a reasonable price *just* to change the cam belt.

If the belt is GBP20 that leaves GBP100 for labour. Whats the average per hour, I would think close to 3 hours needed to change the cam belt.

between £30 and £40, which is about right for an indi in the wilderness. MGR rates are double that at £60 to £80 (BMW rates are much higher!). This makes sense of the figures.

As I said, you can't do it cutting any corners - if it's done it's done.
