MG MGF Technical - Car Hood Warehouse

Does anyone out there have experience of the mohair hood with glass rear panel supplied by Car Hood Warehouse?
Like many owners I suspect, the FPO couldn't be bothered to unzip the rear panel in the original hood and got away with it until the first frosty morning then it went cerrrrrack. The hood is very tatty and has a couple of scruffy repairs so we thought we would go the whole hog with a new one rather than replace the rear panel only.
Any views on the CHW product would be most welcome.

BAS International supplied MGR with the TF Hood and are the only accepted manufacturer. If it is not BAS then do not buy it.

Mike Satur is doing a glass heated rear screen upgrade for £195 plus vat & Delivery - It's basically a swap for the plastic one, just needs pop riveting in - I've just bought and fitted one - It's an excellent piece of kit and comes with all the necessary rivets, wiring etc - Took a few hours to fit but I'd highly recommend it. Especially if it's just the screen that's gone. I can't get used the the crystal clear view out of the back window and the fact that I can de-mist in the mornings!!

hello mark, does your hood fold ok with the glass screen in???
alex

Yes, it's quite ingenious really -

Look towards the rear of your hood and you'll see the last hood bow, (which lies directly under the seam running across the rear of the car and covered in black felt). Although it looks like one solid piece, it is actually made up of two parts bolted together - A clamp bar with studs on it clamps a flap on the hood plus the zip section of the rear screen onto the hood bow. This is then covered in felt. Under normal operation, when you fold the roof down, the bow/hood flap/clamp bar moves as one and folds the plastic screen in half, unless you unzip it of course.

When you install the new screen, you unbolt the two pieces and use the clamp bar to fasten the hood flap and the new zip section together using the nuts which originally fastened it to the bow. This means that the clamp bar & hood bow can now move independantly of each other. Then you widen the holes in the hood bow so that the nuts on the clamp bar can drop into them.

What this means is that the two pieces can come together when the hood is up (and look just as they did before) but can be separated when you lower the hood, allowing the glass screen (still zipped in place) to lower onto the parcel shelf and the hood bow to pass over the top of the screen and fold into it's normal position.

It takes a little bit of fiddling to separate the two and when you want to put the hood down and to join them again when you want to put it up but it's straight forward enough (and I'm sure I'll improve with practice - it's only been installed a week!!). I won't be able to throw the roof over my head any more when I want to put it down but I'll still be able to lower it in seconds (and far quicker than I would if I had to unzip the screen).

The installation might sound complicated but it's really quite straight forward and the hood comes with a full set of instructions - It's time consuming, rather than difficult I would say.

My window went "cerrrrack" this mornig but I think old age is to blame plus some help from the PO.
My local suplier wants 350€ for a new window.
Is there any cheaper solution for this?
Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Miguel, If you want to replace the plastic with a new one, Sonia is universally well reported and posted here earlier this year about the service she operates:-

I am the Sonia Morris mentioned by Geoff Smart.

He is correct that I do still replace back screens in MGF's either by post or you can bring the car to me, if you bring the car I charge £115-00 if you post the price is £75 + £8 p&p total £83. I use 1mm thick green tint. I can also supply slider kits for your zip if you have broken yours and are not able to do your zip up or find it difficult to do so, these are £10 and include instruction on how to fit.

I am happy to advise.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL "

That would come to a lot less than 350 euros even with overseas postage! HTH, Charles
