MG MGF Technical - Cat Heat Shield

Hi All,
During a recent service I was told the Cat heat shield was rotten and needed replacing.

When I came to book this in I was told by the garage that the only way to get a new heat shield is to get a new cat.

The car is '99 VVC about 60,000.

Is a new cat due soon anyway?
Any ideas where I can source a heat shield by its self?

Thanks
John

Well claim to need a new one on my VVC, like yours at 68k.. - so I'd say yes..,
Though mine might just need a head sheild too.

Does it sound like metal box of marbles?

I am sure that my MGF passed its last MOT without the heat shield. I removed it because it was rotten and the rattling drove me mad.

ASk the garage if they can spot weld it back into place as a temp fix 9this should do you another year or two!
Will Munns

Forgive my ignorance here, but when you guys refer to the heat shield are you talking about the big thing which runs horizontally over the exhaust or the outer casing of the cat?

Cheers,
Tim

Catalysts usually have a pretty long service life: expect 150k or 10+ years unless damaged by collision or corrosion.

A heat shield is not an MoT item that I am aware of. If rattling, I see no reason why you couldn't just remove it as Steve has done?
Rob Bell

Good question Tim.

I got back on to the Garage this morning and they are talking about the tin/asbestos sheet that goes between the cat/exhaust and the body of the car.

Surely this can be obtained separately or nearly new from a breaker.
Would one from a TF fit?
Anyone know a good breaker with lots of MGF/TF bits who wont sell me one that’s just as bad as the one I’ve already got.

As to just removing it, the boot is already like an oven after a long drive.

{Only over the bumps at the moment.

When I refered to the CAT heat sheild, I was refering to the 8" x 6" piece of shaped metal that is held about 5mm from the front edge of the CAT.
Steve Ratledge

There are two sheilds, one is as Steve discribes the other is on the exhaust, AFAIK there is no 'shared sheild'

The one over the exhaust back box? I haven't had one of those for 5 years: mine had split and was making a nasty 'tizzing' noise which reasonated at certain rpm. I threw it in a skip and never replaced it ;o)

For a replacement, try the MGFC or Midland MGF.
Rob Bell

At least on mine there is a share one, it goes over the exhaust and over the cat. One piece item.

This is part of the car though? and wouldn't require a new cat
Will Munns

Thanks Rob,
Rang the MGF Centre. They have loads for a reasonable sum and about the same again for delivery.
It seems to be a single item that goes over both cat and back box.
John

OK, now I'm confused! The cat shield - is this the outer casing of the cat, ie. the bit of flimsy metal which is folded over the bottom edge of the cat, rusts away and starts to rattle? Or is it a separate part similar to the main exhaust shield (the big horizontal thing which runs between the boot and the back box)?

Cheers,
Tim.

I got the description of the rotten part from the garage and passed this on to the MGF Centre.
I have no idea what it *should* be called.
