I presume it would be the WD40 burning off the cat bolts as it gets mighty hot down there - good luck trying to get them off, it might be worth checking Rob's site for any tips.

Darren, it's a pig of a job!

I also have a 2001 MGF, and recently replaced the exhaust - incidentally, I got a replacement standard TF exhaust from ebay, and it definitely flows better and sounds sportier than the original.

I was also going to replace the cat, but had to use an angle grinder to get the exhaust off - and that took so long I decided not to bother with the cat. I also found that the sensor wouldn't shift, so that also aided my decision.

If I find I have to change my cat, I will definitely take it to a garage!

you will require good access to the bottom of the car, axle stands and wheels off as a minimum, preferably over a pit, ideally on a lift.

my recommendation is to get a quote from a garage prior to taking it to them - and hold them to the quote!!

cheers

this is a genral not technical question.

stick a straight pipe on dude.

Darren, I agree with Mike - get an exhaust fitter to do this job for you. Will need oxyacetylene to loosen off the exhaust/cat bolts - and this isn't something that tends to be in everyone's tool box!

Good luck!

Mine had to be cut off as they were stuck on and weren't budging - I think the garage charged me £15 or £20 to do that... WELL worth it considering the hassle you'd have to go through as well as bleeding knuckles if you did it yourself!

with the cats bolts are they part off the exhuuast are they a stud with a nut screwed on ??? any help darren

What age is your F?

Mine is a MY2001 (actually a 2000) and has the Mark II cat/exhaust.

My CAT had bolts incorporated into it at the downpipe side, but just holes at the downpipe side.

However my new cat only had holes at both ends so had use new bolts etc for that end.

If you have an older one then I am sorry but I am not sure.

hi mate mines a 51 plate my 2001 darren so think i have studs then mine has the mark 2 cat with the lambada sensor on the curve
darren jeffery

when replacing the cat do i need to get two new exhuast gaskets are the bolts replaceble on the ends or are they studs. darren sorry i have a my 51 plate car with lambada sensor on the curve ..
darren jeffery

Get the 2 stainless steel gaskets as they tend to get compressed = leakage when re-used. They are anyway cheap and a leakage at those joints will probably make a fail at the MoT.
