MG MGF Technical - Changing to 16' Wheels

At some time in the future I'm considering changing to 16" wheels. Looking through the archives there is a lot about fitting bump stops. Are these really necessary?
David Clelland

Dave, unless your car is lowered or you intend to lower it i really wouldnt bother. Had no problems since putting mine on, then again i havent tried keeping up with you over bumps etc. like last weekend when you were "maxing" the itg!
Davey

I went to 16" trophy alloys, the only problem i has was purely visual. The standard discs and calipers looked tiny. Trophy discs and calipers soon went on. Maybe i too should look at the bump stops too though, if i remember rightly though Dieter mentioned only changing them if lowering knuckles are to be fitted.

Never had the bump stop kit fitted. Scarlet has been lowered (typically around 320mm) and on 16" wheels since 1998 with no problems at all.

IMO they aren't worth it.

I've been on 16" wheels for about 18 months now with no bump stops and no problems. (When on full lock ie juggling out of a car park there is a slight rubbing sound of the tyres catching on the wheel arch liners).

Dave,i agree with Scarlet, and Rob,i have lowering knuckles and no probs with mine either, Dave

Remember that although the rim size is greater, 16" wheels wear lower profile rubber. The overall diameter of the 16" wheel is the same as the 15". No need for bump stops even with the car lowered.

Dieter investigated this a while ago - the new bumpstops sold with the 16" wheels are simply stronger versions of the original.

Not strictly necessary (I haven't got them either)
