MG MGF Technical - Chrome exhaust finishers

I've got a 2.5 year old Steptronic and recently one of
the exhaust finshers disappeared. I didn't know whether it had been nicked or had fallen off until a month later I noticed the other one hanging off the exhaust. Moving it back into place it 'came off in my hand'.... so now I have no exhaust finishers at all!

Is this 'normal', has this happened to anyone else? and is this sort of thing covered by the 3 year warranty? Even if I bought 2 new finishers I'd also have to replace the exhaust as it is the exhaust that has corroded and broken off... all very sad!

Any comments appreciated!

Ben,

I'm sorry to say that this does seem to be a problem. I know of one or two other cars that this has hapened to and in fact the nearside finisher fell of my car (2001 Steptronic) on this year's Highlander in May. The car's going fine so I'm waiting 'til I head south to Silverstone next month before I get a new stainless steel one fitted. The reason for this problem is that the later cars (MY2000 and TF) have mild steel exhausts fitted whereas the earlier ones had stainless steel ones fitted.

Looks like too many short runs with the exhaust not getting hot enough to dry out the moisture.

Your Warranty must be your first approach.

Geoff,

In my case the car isn't used as a daily means of transport, so it doesn't do any short runs. Mostly it's CSMGF Outings over the types of roads that we drove over in May. Length of these outings tend to be 200 - 350 miles. Most cars need their exhaust replaced after 2 or 3 years and I don't think the MGF / TF is any different - funny that it's always the tailpipe next to the finisher that goes. I might be wrong but I don't think the exhaust is covered for more than a year under warranty.

The TF one is different to the late F's, as its made from low grade stainless rather than mild steel. If fact, when I fitted my Janspeed to the TF, I sold my standard TF silencer to a guy who fitted it to his 2000 MGF because he was suffering from the exact same problem as you guys.
On of his tailpipes trims had come loose and dropped onto his bumper and melted it :(

Like yours, mine is a play car with mostly long runs but I noticed that it would be left outside until put away in its shed. The start up and 3 minutes running was enough for water to drip from the tailpipes. Tell tale signs on the garage floor.
Maybe with Steptronics, we do not rev the engine sufficient to blow out the water as we would on a stick shift !!

One question, apart from looking nice do the finishers have much use? Will the car fail its MOT without the finishers?

Could be time to look for a new exhaust!

@ Ben,
at first complain at your dealer and if he isn't able to help I'd recommend writing a letter of complaint to MGR. Even if the car out of warranty.

.. it's said some years ago there had been a problem with the finishers rusting away.... and replacement finishers are availiable.

Have you ever tried to keep up with Mr Clelland on twisting country roads?? lol!!!

My finishers fell off in exactly the same way - 1 first, then the other a couple of weeks later. It does seem to be a common problem. I shelled out for a new exhaust - car 3 years old, so figured that was about right anyway.
