MG MGF Technical - cigarette lighter

Hello,

Anyone know where to get (preferably in the Netherlands) the following device of which I have no idea what it's called:

It plugs into the cigarette lighter and on the other end are "two cigarette lighters" so to speak, thus enabling two devices to be plugged into the one cigarette lighter. Am I making any sense?

I've seen one of these gadgets somewhere once, only I don't remember where.

cheers,
Robbert.

These are available in the UK from Halfords stores which probably will not help you too much.
However, the first time I saw them was in France in a motorway service centre filling station. I also saw them this year in a hypermarket somewhere in France.
I guess you would find them in almost any motor accessory store in Amsterdam?

Thanks,

didn't know these things were so common. Thing is I want to buy a GPS receiver to connect to my PDA. But I already have a telephone carkit plugged into the cigarette lighter.

To avoid extra wires from the cigar lighter running all over the place I have wired my GPS into the 'permanently on' wire that feeds the reading lights in the rear view mirror - it is an easy enough job to do:-

First remove the grey screen trim which give you access to these wires then splice in the lead for the GPS replace trim, when not in use you can wrap the spare length of wire around the rear view mirror stem.

This has two advantages -

1/ it is tidier

2/ the GPS stays active even when the car is locked - which saves the 'searching for sattelites' time when restarting - very useful when leading another ten MGFs across Europe.

Ted,
There must be a easier wire to get to, there is a permenent feed to the car radio for instance, but I spose the easiness of this solution depends on where you put the GPS!

Ted, thanks for the advise. I am a bit apprehensive about doing too much DIY things in the car. I already stuck my neck out by hiding most wires attached to my telephone car kit (which produces real crappy sound by the way --> so I never ever use it; but it is convenient just to charge the battery of my telephone!).

thanks,
Robbert.

The wire in question is actually very easy to get at - it is much easier to remove the internal screen surround than the fascia for example.

Plus my GPS is mounted on the top of the dash - just in front of the MG logo (in front meaning closer to the driver) and the wire just drops down to it.

Dieter has a picture of it on his web site - if I can find it I will post the URL.

The GPS is the Garmin StreetPilot lll Deluxe which is full portable and fits on my bike as well, it just needs the self adhesive base pad mount to be left in place.

Ted,

just found the picture:

Do you think the power cable could be inserted in the middle air vent, then behind the middle console and attached to the cable that provides power to the cigarette lighter? (and this question from someone who doesn't fancy doing any DIY work in the car!).
