MG MGF Technical - Clicking From Rear??

My F has a clicking sound from the rear of the car most times (but not every time ) I move away either in first or reverse. As well as at slow speeds ie when rolling up to a junction and pulling away

Took it to a Garage, the same one who eventualy sorted (I Hope!) my overheating, and they said it was the flexi joint for the exhuast.

I Then took it to another garage, who said it wasnt my exhuast but my gearbox

Now I'm just confused!! Any advice would be greatfuly accepted

It's probably a mechanic trapped in the boot, still shaking his head and saying "Tut,tut, tut". :¬)
I guess nobody really knows what the noise is. The description is vague. Do you mean one click as you actually come to a standstill or move off? Or is it a continual clicking which changes with speed? How loud?
One click scenario may be a slack differential. Continual could even be a stone in the tyre!

Sorry this doesn't help

It hapens mostly when pulling away from a standstill but also when accelerating from a very slow speed. it only happens at this times and is not constant. Hence its more noticable around town. Its loud enough to be heard with or without the roof up and by my father who was about 20 feet away from the car when i was pulling off.

Thanks Mark

But is it one click per occasion? Are your wheel nuts tight?
One clonk noise as you apply power to the driven wheels would suggest diff or constant velocity joint problems.

i had this very similar issue on my F, all your symptons mentioned were true for myself, turned out to be some mounting bracket (engine?)at the rear, long time ago, so sorry for being vague.

I had something like this the other week for about 10 mins and then it went away.. for me it sounded like one of them plastic clicker things that you (or at least I) used to put in bike wheels as a kid to make a noise.. whatever it was it came from the engine and it sped up with higher revs...

A couple of days b4 I had spotted a mouse trying to live in the car so I assumed it was something to do with that... now no sign of mouse or clicks so didnt chase it up.

I had the same problem! It occured after i went for the 40.000 service. The problem was a bolt in the rear bottom of car. This bolt, is linked with the chassis. To fix it ,someone has to tighten this bolt very hard.
