MG MGF Technical - Climate control box

My problem appears to be a common leak behind the heater in the passenger footwell. I am following the excellent advice on these pages but my 1996 MG is an Import as so has a huge climate control system infront of the offending seal with pipes running through the bulkhead. The leaky section of these pages does suggest that there is a way to solve this problem from the top. Any clues please? Failing that how do I take off a climate control box???? Yours hopefully

Bruce, I am intrigued, could you advise if tampering like an amatuer with the climate system is a good idea or not. I am assuming that before I can remove anything I have to drain the pipes. Is there a good ref. book which I can pick as a guide? thanks

Paul,

As I explained in my e-mail to you, I did not have to remove any of the aircon system. The evaporator (heat exchanger) is mounted against the bulkhead next to the heater. It's the black box that the passenger's feet kick. It does not have to be removed to cure the leak.

The airbox sits on top of the bulkhead shelf under the bonnet as shown in the photo I sent. A hole in the shelf under the box allows air through into the car. The air is ducted down to the aircon evaporator and then to the heater. The leak is around the hole in the bulkhead shelf. You just need to place sealant around the outside of the airbox or remove the airbox to replace the seal under it.

I agree with your comment that you should not tamper with the pipes because you will release the refrigerant into the atmosphere if you undo any pipes. You will then have to seal the open pipes to prevent moisture ingress and recharge the system when you have replaced the pipes. Costly business, especially if you have it done by an MGR dealer. A local air conditioning company is the cheapest bet for recharging. They must use the correct gas though(R134A). The gas is nasty stuff and will freeze your skin if you're not careful.

If you need more pics let me know.
