MG MGF Technical - Clutch Pedal Sticking

Oh no, I've just had a new HG and now this!!!
I have a 96 'F' 1.8i 50k. For a few weeks ive had a creaking noise coming from the drivers footwell, to be more precise when depressing the clutch pedal. I noted from the previous owners service invoices that this had been mentioned about 15k ago the remedy was "lubricate clutch pedal assembly". The other morning however something rather more unpleasant happend. As i took my foot off the clutch pedal it stayed depressed and so did I. The only way to release it was to hook it back from underneath. After pumping it for a while i was able to get moving but quick getaways were out of the question. As everything warmed up, inside mainly as it was pretty cold, the pedal seem to operate almost without an lag. Ive sprayed oil on the pedal where the bar runs through it at the top, all thats done has given me neckache. What dark forces are at work here? Is something more sinister going on? can anyone relate to this.

I had a similar creak from the clutch pedal pivot point in my TF135 from about 6 months old.

WD40 seems to keep the noise at bay and so far the problem has not escalated to this degree.

If you remove the engine cover and get a friend to press the clutch pedal several times, you will see the clutch slave cylinder and a lever that moves, near the airfilter.

You need to spray some WD40 etc at the pivot point, then once it is moving freely use some 3 in 1 or engine oil. This is quite common.

Success thanks Alastair. I must confess that was my first visit to the engine compartment not as scarey as I thought it would be.

I have had precisely same experience with the clutch.
I have had many a vehicle including tractors where the clutch plates stick together after standing. Its a weird sensation when the oposite happens and you lift the clutch up and the car fails to move.Waiting for warm up and frantic pedal pumping worked for me but until reading your comments i thought i needed a new clutch.
My head gasket also went 10000 miles ago.
Recently overheated again losing water from the head over the exhaust.I was so annoyed I carried on driving refilling with gallons of water. There was No water in oil.Checked rear of engine small steady stream presumably the beading on the head gasket failed. Amazingly has now stopped completely with a dose of radweld, but how long for?
I drive with a constant eye on the temperature gauge and carry 3 gallons of water.
