MG MGF Technical - Clutch Replacement Procedure

Hi All,

I have finally had some time to diagnose my slipping clutch and have come to the conclusion that it is indeed the clutch unit which needs to be replaced.
Also the thrust (release) bearing is making a noise when the clutch pedal is all the way out, but it goes silent when I depress the clutch pedal in fully.

So It's a clutch replacement kit for me.

And yes, I have already performed the suggested procedure of smothering WD40, Oil, etc, at the release linkage but no effect.
While driving I can rev the engine and I can hear/feel the clutch slipping and not transferring power to where it's supposed to go. High revs, minimal acceleration.

I have spoken to a mechanic and he said that they do not drop out the engine or gearbox. They can seperate them and access the clutch (somehow). They don't depressurise the hydrogas.

The workshop manual advises to depressurise the hydrogas suspension. The mechanic says no need to.

Ok, has anyone replaced the clutch themselves?

If you have done so, can you please email me procedures that you actually used.

You help will be appreciated.

Your mechanic must be a magician ! Engine out job.

most cars list a clutch as an engine out job, but in most cars you are able to dit it in situ - I haven'y done it on mine so I cannot comment on how possible this is on the F.

My TF has been at B+G the last couple of days because of a clutch judder problem at start-up. They were going to change it with the engine in situ - bit of a squeeze apparently but better than having to drop the whole thing and drain everything. Didn't change it in the end as they couldn't replicate the fault at this time but always nice to have a wonder about anyway!(just scared of driving in the snow and wanted a front wheel drive courtesy car if the truth were known - just joking!!)

Quick look at Manual

Remove gearbox to get at clutch but leave engine in:

....

72. Lower subframe sufficiently to allow gearbox
removal.
73. Raise engine on jack until clear of rear
subframe LH longitudinal member.
74. Remove 7 bolts and 1 nut and bolt securing
gearbox to engine.
75. With assistance, release gearbox from engine.
76. Remove gearbox between body and subframe.
77. Remove circlips from end of both drive shafts.

A Swiss garage changed the clutch on my '96 MPI 4 years ago without taking out the engine or gearbox.

IIRC he dismantled the left rear wheel and part of the suspension linkage and did it in situ.

Sorry I can't give you more details but I remember seeing the F on a lift with all in place except the rear wheel.

I know he didn't need to depressurise the hydragas system though, because he doesn't have a hydragas pump.

Thanks for your responses, but I may need to clarify one of my questions: "Ok, has anyone replaced the clutch themselves?"

What I mean is has anyone actually physically replace the clutch themselve? That is, "DIY", dirty hands, engine hoists etc, etc.

The reason I ask is that before I start this job of replacing the clutch I would like to get a heads up for any tricks/tips/procedures that the workshop manual does not tell me.

Cheers.

I put my hand up - I have never personally changed a clutch in an F; I have never even had a clutch changed in an F; some days it takes me all my time to just change a gear in the F. The big problem is, of course, the access.

Good luck
