MG MGF Technical - Coolant Alarm Lamp

Hi guys,

I have fitted the B&G low coolant alarm system.

I'm reluctant to drill a hole in the dashboard for the LED lamp.

I was thinking of having the LED output activate a relay, which would extend an earth to terminal C0233-11 of Instrument Pack J100, which would light the handbrake/brake fluid/hazard flasher warning light in the instrument cluster.

What do you think???

Sam,
I think we are all to lazy to look up about "terminal C0233-11 of Instrument Pack J100"
;) <<-- smile

Sounds a good idea not to drilling holes.
May be another option is to feed an extra LED into the instrument pack.
I recall there's are not all holes for bulbs used in the instrument.
See on the right on this rear view of an MK1 pack.

I slightly remember something with the extra light for the japanese catalyst overheating ?

Hi Sam & Dieter,

Yes, Dieter is right. There is an amber light for the cat that was used in the Japan cars. Just by
a socket and a bulp, weld it in to the circuit behing
the dash, and you will have a proper warning light,
and not one that look like you have taken it from
a Minor 1000, year 1959

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Since posting my message, I have had an idea.

I will mount the relay under the armrest cubby box and connect it to the handbrake warning light switch.

When the relay extends an earth to it, it will light the handbrake/brake fluid/hazard warning light.

This way, I won't have to remove the instrument binnacle, which is a bit of a pain.

When driving, you never look down at the warning lights however the buzzer will wake you up.
Should the buzzer fail, then I have fitted a LED in the footwell light panel. Being out of the sunlight, it is more likely to be seen than a dash light.

Hi Geoff,

I agree, buzzer is going to be the most effective, but I just want to make sure... just in case I'm belting along with the hood down and "Bat out of Hell" full blast on the CD player.

I now just need to make sure that the Lo Alarm CPU box LED output is capable of driving a relay.

Hi Sam,

Have a word with B & G about fitting a relay instead of the led. If no joy then measure the current consumption of the led. It could well be a low current one. If your relay current consumption is much higher then you can always add a transistor driver to the relay. Don't forget the diode across the relay coil. You will need to connect the 12 volt feed to the relay or the driver transistor, depending on whether your sinking or sourcing the transistor.

Success!

There was indeed a spare lamp position on the instrument binnacle.

I shaped the LED holder which came with the B&G kit to fit and lock into the spare hole.

When the alarm is activated, I now get a nice bright red exclamation mark alert as well as the beep.

Perfect!

Thanks guys.
