MG MGF Technical - Coolant loss

Hi Guys,
I've been monitoring my coolant drop recently, on the 3rd of Aug I topped up the expansion tank and today I have noticed the level is down by about 750ml. Is that categorised as a rapid loss and therefore should I seek professional help?

Cheers for any advice.

Mogs,

Any coolant loss is a worry, as there should be absolutely none. 750ml = 75cl = a bottle of wine's worth (OK now I get the picture) - yes that's a lot to 'top up'. How low was it when you added the bottle of wine, I mean 750ml? If it was pretty near the bottom of the expansion tank then you could have air in the system which is another worry and the coolant system should be bled as soon as possible (see http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/hgf_pages/coolant_bleed_procedure.htm)

Thanks Dave,
Oh how easily did you get the measure of me? The water level was fairly low and the bottle of wine managed to fill the expansion tank to about 1cm above the expansion tank join. Today its about back to the original level pre-top up. Anyhow, I've got an extended warranty so I'll limp back to the garage.

Cheers

LOL - speaks volumes for both of us :-)

Good luck at the garage. The scope is wide - from a few pence for a plastic radiator bleed screw that's perished to a full blown HGF. Good job you have the warranty :-) Let us know how you get on.

my coolant level has dropped also in the last month or so, it was just over the seam of the bottle now it is just under? Is that something to be worried about, as it doesn't seem much. Can't see any leaks anywhere.

A small amount of variation in the expansion tank is normal - the level and rise and fall. If however the level continues to fall, then there is a problem to investigate Andrea.

Cool thanks rob, I will make sure I check it frequently!

Just back from the garage. They could find no problem after a 30 min pressure test and have suggested that I come back in after 1000 miles which will probably be around my service date anyway. However, they did mention that the front bearings were on the way out after I mentioned a knocking coming form the nearside at relatively low speeds. Also there was some play in the steering rack. Thank the lord for warranty.

Suggest immidiately to see whether Fuse No 2 for front fan in the bonnet fuse box is still _alive_

Change from 15Amp to 20Amp in any way... and go for a new coolant expansion tank cap.
