MG MGF Technical - Coolant question

I have a MK2 F (2000). The coolant level has dropped about 1 CM. But when I took off the cap to top it up, it returned to the normal level. I woundered if theres an air lock somehere. Can you please tell me where are the bleed valves for the coolant. Also, should coolant run back into the expansion tank from the narrow pipe, or not.

I asked the local Rover dealer who didn't give me an answer but did say "Has yours got a second small tank in the pipe". I don't have this second tank (and didn't really know what he was talking about). Does anyone know of this and if so, why it was fitted (perhaps to stop air locks).

Thanks
Keith

This happened to me: it presaged a HGF. In my case there was high pressure in the cooling system when the engine was cold due to gas getting in from the engine. Liquid level rose over normal level, so you may be OK. Mine ran warmer than normal at the time : front fan on at end of journey, very rare normally.

Yes, coolant will run in from the upper narrow pipe.

Others can advise on bleed points, but there are 4 I believe including one near the radiator.

If concerned about the possibility of the coolant system pressurising as a result of a gasket leak, use an MoT inspectors exhaust gas analyser. Remove the coolant resevoir cap, and put the tip of the analyser into the space above the coolant. If hydrocarbons are detected, then unfortunately, you have exhaust gases attempting to escape past the head gasket's fire rings... :o(

Rob,

I thought coolant used to run out of the small pipe, into the expansion tank, but now it doesn't. Does it on yours.

Yup, coolant does run via the bypass circuit on my car. How much you see is pretty variable, and i confess that I haven't made much of a study of it - so I am not sure how helpful this answer is to you Keith :o(
