MG MGF Technical - Coolant loss sensor modification

I have the sensor, supplied by my local mg rover dealer but he cannot come up with the part no for the latest expansion tank to fit it to! Can anyone help?

Yep, that's about it. All the other bits & pieces, i.e. electronic bits, were readily available, if you see what I maen. ;-)

Of course, it did take some time to build, fit and test, which is what you pay for if you buy it from elsewhere, but that's half the fun and great satisfaction when it works.

Hi Tony,

got my ordered bulk of original parts today.
Had a look to the *how doses it work*Žand will supply some high-Q images later.

The sensor is an *over mold* reed switch. So you are right with connecting it to a transistor _no load_ circuit.

You can hear the switch silent *click* if you put the sensor near your ear and pass another magnet along the sensor.

Activated by a swimmer with magnet installed within the expansion tank. Going up and down due to the coolant level. I will measure the hysteresis of the switch-magnet configuration at dry parts later also.

These means @ all DIY's:
The reed switch is not able to drive high load. The less it gets, the longer it lasts.
The Diameter af the reed switch may be about 2mm only. The type of this standard part rules the max. load.
Not sure. Usual they are 0.5 W only.

@ Will, please correct me if I'm wrong :)
