MG MGF Technical - cracked rear screen

Well putting the top down the other day and gave the rear plastic screen a gentle tap to "tube" it and "snap" cracked/split it. Few places on ebay in the UK I can get a replacment, any recommendations? I can replace the whole top for just a few hundred bucks landed, might go that way. Mines the 75th anniversary model in mulberry red it’s a deep maroon colour. Would like to have the top in a matching colour, finding that harder than I thought. Thanks :o)

P,

Once you have replaced the top/screen, get a piece of expanded foam pipe insulation the same width as the screen and pop it into the crease when you fold the top down. This will prevent the dreaded split screen, without the need to unzip the blasted thing, as is recommended.

Thanks, is it viable to fit the top youself or is this a living hell that will only end in tears and heart break?
P Thomas

You could fit the rear screen yourself, but the hood ............ well I wouldn't, but there are posters who will advise you better than me.

Hi P,
I have a the Cherry Red coloured hood on my Nightfire Red beast but you can't have it!
Just go to a good auto/marine trimmer and they will make a new window for you, get you one or they can fit the one you get on to your hood.
I had mine replaced on the hood due to the zipper being faulty. The auto/marine trimmer just replaced the whole rear plastic window. The trimmer just replaced the plastic and stitch and seal it back on to the hood as it was. Should be plenty of auto/marine trimmers up in sunny Queensland to help you out. Too easy....
I don't think it actually costs that much to do either.

Also, highly recommend Sam's advice with the foam. When I have the black hardtop or hood down without the hood cover on I unzip the plastic window and lay it flat wrapped in a thick maroon big bath towel or beach size towel so it dosn't scratch and blends in with the colour of the hood and interior. Also prevents sun damage to the plastic.

Thanks for the advice, Sue where did you get your hood from? I really like the BAS international sportster top comes with a glass rear window. Ends up being about a grand AUD landed here, that I can deal with but Ive been quoted between 5 and 650 dollars to install it. Theres a mob in the UK that rock over to your house and install the top at your place for an extra 60 pounds or something like that so it cant be rocket science surely. I like the idea of a maroon top to match my maroon car too Sue :o)

I got my hood through "Clifford Powell Auto Trimmers" who did all the work for MG Garage Sydney. They are still operating in Alexandria. Don't get ripped off with installation. Some people hear the letters MGF and you see $$$ in their eyes. These trimmers obviously do not work on many convertibles. Just tell them to their dream'in!
Is a grand landed with hood and frame as well or just hood. I cannot imagine its that difficult if you have a few rest breaks in between, just fiddly...

Hope this helps...

Sam's idea of foam is good. Personally I use a black towel sown as a sausage round another towel as internal packing. The screen wraps itself perfectly around the towelling with no kinks or scratches. I have a MY2000 MGF, I've never unzipped its original rear screen yet. I always lower the hood to drive the car in the dry and always raise it when parking or once back home in the garage. Its been up and down a few times now and the screen is still like new!
