MG MGF Technical - creakin clutch pedal

can sombody help ..when i press the clutch pedal in it sound like a creakin floorboard whats the best remedy....
alex

This is the bearings on the clutch arm in the gearbox getting dry - unfortunatly it is an engine out job to cure, but you can extend the life somewhat by spraying a lot of 3in1 oil onto the shaft whilst getting someone to work the pedal. To do this you have to remove the engine cover as the arm is on the top of the bellhousing.
Will Munns

thanks for your input will, but the sound is coming from the pedal itself and i can here the noise inside the car...
alex

The clutch fluid will transmit the noise, so I would still check this first.
Will Munns

if the return spring connected to the pedal is stiff, it may well creak. Mine twangs like a (funnily enough) spring. Light oiling in the right place might work!

I had the same problem and used the service lube provided by my MG dealer to move any moving part of the clutch pedal assembly under the dash. Needed to wipe away the excess lube but it's cured the problem. Had to do it a couple of times now. HTH.

Funnily enoough i have the same noise with my brake pedal, not clutch. Does anybody have a cure. I have tried wd40 but it did not remedy.

...same here, Yigit, my brake pedal creaks for several days, then is quiet for a couple of weeks, then starts to creak again.

Are you sure it's not your knees in this cold damp weather? :)
Tony

The noise drives me mad Simon. My only solution that worked fine so far is to turn on the radio. I will have it checked by the garage next time i go there which is 3-4 months from today.
Yigit

Good point, Tony. Didn't think of that!!

Mind you, that wouldn't be the answer to the rattling seats, windows and doors that have just recently developed. That's down to TF (non-)suspension, low profile tyres and Canterbury's 'king awful roads!!!!!!

Happy Christmas everyone....be careful out there.

I had the same creaking on my TF coming from the pedal area..... 3in1 didnt fix it....a spray of WD40 didnt fix it. Went to Halfrauds and bought a can of Spray Grease ( blue can , blue lid , item code 724526 ) cured it instantly and its never came back !!
P.S I sprayed the top of the clutch pedal, spring area.

A lot less hassle than removing engines etc ;-)

Would it cure my creaking brake pedal problem i wonder. One problem though, we do not halfrauds here so i need to get a similar product.

Funnily enough this happened to me a when I came back from holiday! It had been fine all year, and when I came back (it had been sat in the garage for 2 weeks un-used) it started to creak so much whenver I braked and changed gear! Drove me MAD!

I simply bought some WD40, stuck on the straw attachement and sprayed up the pedal area and it did work a bit but it didn't cure it! It still really irrated me and I had to do something about it!

So I decided to give it a proper spray which meant getting under the pedals and sticking me head in there so I could see where I was spraying ha ha! (VERY ARKWARD! Ouch!) I managed to cover all the moving parts! This cured it straight away and it hasnt squeeked since! (4 months ago!) So give it a go!

For those who don't already know...

WD40 is a Water Dispellant (hence WD). It may cure a problem temporarily, but it will cause more problems than it fixes if the lubricant that it displaces (WD40 will remove oil and grease, as well as water) is not replaced.

The main problem is that there are no lubricating holes in the clutch and brake pedal pivots. And it seems that there was no or not enough grease applied during the build.
And this is an old problem, we noticed this allready back in -98 on the very early cars!
With a bit of luck one can get some lube in between the pivots. Once again I mention my own "fix" for difficult lubrication ; Lithium grease on a spraycan. It comes out of the nozzle and extension tube as a thin liquid but very quickly solidifies as a "grease". Good for hinges etc. as well. /Carl
Carl

Thanks Carl i think that will solve the problem. Now to find the lithium grease.
