MG MGF Technical - Cylinder Head advice needed

My MGF broke down last week my local MG dealership said that the cylinder head has gone and want £1600 to fix it! The car is just over 3 years old, 2 months out of warranty. Can anyone advise if they have had a similar problem and should the cylinder have gone after 3 years, it's done 43K miles.

it will be the cylinder head GASKET that has failed, mine went on saturday. Its a common problem, covered in depth in the archives, just search for HGF.

£1600 sounds steep tho, unless you didnt spot it in time, in which case it could have done some serious damage to the engine.

no doubt someone a bit technical will be along later to add more

You have have probably seen the national newspaper articles, BBC Watchdog and others commenting on MGR and LandRover head gasket failures?

What do they mean 'cylinder head has gone'? Do they mean HGF? BTW is the car a VVC or MPi? If a simple HGF caught in time then a repair bill of upto £600 would seem about par. If not caught in time further damage to the head itself can put the cost up.

I've no idea how much a VVC unit costs but not cheap.

Ask more questions of the dealer before letting them spend your money.

Come back to the bbs for as much help as you need.

What are they planning on doing for £1600 ?
Tell us what they have said, and the collective here can tell you what %age is cobblers. :-)

HGF can and does happen. I'd be suprised if you cannot get it fixed for significantly less than £1600 though!

Have you approached MGR directly and asked for a contribution?

HI fella,

Sorry to hear the bad news, happens to the best of us. When i had a HGF on a 99 VVC it cost £750 ,but at one point they said that it looked like one of the water jackets in the actual head and to repace he head was 1550 pounds.

Hope to help

Call Victoria at the MGF Centre for a head
£1600 is a hell of a lot of brass

Just in case it is not a HGF - my cylinder head screwed up and needed sorting out, but it was due a blown spark plug not a HGF.

Engine stripped as necessary, cylinder head away to be skimmed (no idea why really) and have a helicoil put in, then re-assembled, with new type head gasket (if there is such a thing)....750 Euros (£550ish) - Main Rover/MG dealer too!!
