MG MGF Technical - Damn that resonator box!

Hi All,

I know this has been asked before (I'm sure), but what is the best way to hack that damn resonator box out?

I've tried everything from a Stanley knife to a hack saw. Nothing seems to even mark that baby. I get the feeling it's made of plastic coated titanium!

Any tips?

Thanks

Done that been there Sonny, if you feel brave enough and have one or can borrow one get small disc cutter that will make a little easier, they a real bugger to get out, just keep at it and good luck, Dave ;-)

Search in the archives "resonator box". This issue was discussed and someone itemised the workshop manual actions to take it out. Not worth the effort though.

Try with a Dremel.
It worked for me, althought it wasn't as straight forward as I had tought.
Fabrice

I have an undamaged one that was removed from my old F when the gearbox was being swapped.

If anyone can find it a good home - get in touch.

I used a small 125 mm angle grinder but its not recommended. You have to be really carefull with it as there are all sort of pipes in the area (hydragas, brakes)and it makes a mess everywhere and burnt plastic smells horibly. I wouldn'd to it again now but at the time I was really pissed off with not being able to take it off and had already broken about a dozen hacksaw blades on it. That plastic is 1cm thick at some places.

You could use a 25W soldering iron to melt your way thru it. Just have a small fan blowing fumes away from you so you don't breath them.

Sonny.
Leave it alone.
The whole universe is construction around the "F" resonator box.
Plague and famine could befall us all.
God intended it stay just where Rover put it.
IMHO.

Isn't one of the attractions of upgrading the induction system that it's easily reversable when the time comes to sell the car? Good luck putting the mangled bits of plastic back together... ;o)
Mike Hankin

Mike, the resonator is pretty useless, in fact MGR themselves deleted it from newer versions of the car. Actually, I have since reverted to the original airbox and filter just without the resonator.

I think I've actually worked out the thinking by the MG engineers.

They started with a resonator box and built the car around it.

Ingenious.

Looks like I'll just have to persist.

Cheers
