MG MGF Technical - damp patch behind passengers seat

Hi Everyone,

Have just noticed a damp patch behind the passengers seat on my MGF. The carpet is quite wet, have looked under the car very quickly and couldn't see anything obvious.

Any suggestions as to what it could be?

Thanks for any help you can give

I used to get that on my old F, it's almost certainly coming in from either the window seal on the hood (when you're travelling the water runs along the top edge of the glass and then drips down) or the gap at the immediate front edge of the hinge of the hood where it meets the body (just behind the top rear edge of the door).

Cheers,

Water on the floor nearly always comes from above, so I suspect Tim is on the money. But it could be a leak in the heater pipework - I've had that. Does the level in the coolant tank go down at all?

I think Tim is right as long as you haven't been giving lifts to lil old ladies. :-)

The car doesn't use any coolant, I first spotted this problem whilst fitting B & G coolant level alarm into the car.

Have also just had the coolant system redone apart from interior heating system, i.e. new rad, new coolant tank, new s/s underbody cooling pipes and renewed all rubber hoses between these items. System was rebled by knowledgable MG/Rover trained mechanics and still isn't losing coolant.

I do have a small problem with the window and seal on the pasenger side, hopefully when I sort that out this will eradicate itself.

Thanks for the advice

I would agree that it is most probably water ingress through either the seals around the door or more likely through a small gap between the hood and the bodywork which is common on F's.

If it is seals around the door, I found that I have eliminated ingress completely (and it was a considerable problem) by waterproofing the roof with the AutoGlym product. If it is the gap, I'm sorry I can't offer any remedy other than to try to minimise it when raising the hood.

I hope this is some help.

This sounds like it may be a case of the heater/firewall seal is leaking. The water drips down the firewall and runs past the gasket inside the car soaking through the sound proofing felt. I had a similiar problem and it was not apparent from the surface of the carpet the condition underneath. This only seems to happen on the passenger side and on earlier MGF's before the gasket was upgraded. Next time its raining, drop your glovebox and remove the black plastic air duct and see if water is dripping though to the underside of the carpets. To solve the problem seal internally using first silicon sealer (when dry) and then from under the bonnet, run some dum dum compound down the outer seal between the heater casing and the firewall on the passenger side.

There is a excellant article on this on the web, do a search and you should find it.
