MG MGF Technical - Dashboard rattle SOLVED!!

I felt this needed its own thread :-)

After 18 months of having a major rattle in a position I thought was behind the dashboard - last night at around 8.21pm it was finally solved!!

On another thread in the last couple of days, I mentioned the possibility of it being the bonnet hinge... well it was...

After the repair work in March '04 the bodyshop had put the bonnet back on but on the drivers side it, the back of the hinge was against a bit of metal on the bodywork... Here's what I did last night:

1.Took the wipers off
2.Took the black plastic finish part from the bottom of the windscreen
3.Opened the bonnet
4.Loosen the two 10mm bolts securing the bonnet to the bodywork
5.Moved the bonnet forward 1mm on that side
6.Tightened the bolts again
7.Drove the car - rattle gone :-)

Here's a picture to describe

http://pc6.hyperknowledge.com/velma/bonnethinge/bonnethingerattle.jpg

Here's the key:

C - the bonnet
D - the wing on the drivers side
E - the windscreen
A - the very back part of the bonnet hinge
B - part of the bodywork

The red arrow shows the gap that wasn't there before - A and B were together and rattling against each other.

I can't believe it was so easy and I've actually had the whole dash out TWICE trying to solve this.

I was about to take it to the bodyshop again today but luckily I found it first :-)

I'm so much happier with the car again now :-)

Cheers

Chris

You know guys,

I was out at lunch in Velma and for the first time in 18 months I actually found myself aiming for potholes :-)

Marvellous :-)

Now if you can come up with a cure for the sound from my dashboard cowl which sounds like a nest of damn baby sparrows twittering all the time I'll be really impressed!

Terry,

Drop me a mail - I'll take a look if you want :-) I've taken my dash apart so many times now I kind of know whats what back there... and also how shockingly put together it is back there as well!
