MG MGF Technical - Dipstick tube replacement

Thanks to all for the opinions before the new year about the Failed engine mount bolts - Garage say they hadn't jacked or lowered the engine or touched the mountings in any way so pure co-incidence (though one could speculate that yanking around on the exhaust manifold may have made an indirect contribution) - on closer inspection I noted that one of the bolts was only sheared (shiny) from half way through - the other side was dull suggesting a pre-existing crack? - garage also say there was a failure in a different part of the mounting assembly which may have caused the bolts to go. consequential damage seems to be limited to belts and dipstick tube bent (dipstick won't go back in!)
repair costs £350 - 50% parts 50% lab - excluding dipstick tube - hence this post.

Ive looked through the workshop manual and can find no reference to replacing the dipstick tube - have I missed it, is it so straight forward as to require no explanation or is it an omission? - any idea of part no? (presumably salvage will do just fine.)

I suppose i'll need to drain the oil which lead me to the next point, thinking about replacing the oil temp sensor - Though I'll start another thread for that so things dont get too mixed up for the benefit of people using the archive.
thanks all,
James

Mike Hankin had to have this replaced quite recently. I believe that once you have the dip-stick assembly there are just a couple of bolts and a gasket to contend with.

If the dip-stick is longer than the assembly (I don't know if it is or not) then you might not loose any oil if removed.... should be easy to work-out....

This is how it should look if taken off

If you need to split the pipe from the plastic case,
main advise is to push _in_ the red ring at the lower end of the plastik case to release the pipe (almost red ring but some black do exist)
Don't just pull, it will break the red fixture ring. There's a groove in the metal pipe and the sensitive push-ring holds the pipe in place there.

From memory, one bolt at the small lower flange with gasket. Another (bigger) at the lower long bracket and a third screw holds the plastic case.

Its a real easy job no need to drain the oil and can be done without removing the engine cover as it can all be accessed from the boot.

You will need to have a torch and feel your way around if you cannot raise the car but I did it recently in less than 30 minutes.

The shock is the price of the tube, thin piece of metal 10 inches long with a bracket welded on it. £50.That is just the tue and does not include the resevoir, So if you can get a second hand one go for it.

Unbolt the resevoir bracket, reach down and unbolt the two bolts that go into the engine block. Remove the reservoir complete with tube, pull tube out of resevoir, this was a bit tricky I think there was a small grasping washer that needed to be pushed up to release the tube.

Insert new tube, then reverse action to refit. I would replace the gasket also to avoid leaks.

I'm also experiencing a problem witht the dip stick. It appears to have moved!!!

The bolt that held it on to the inlet manifold has dissapeared for some reason so I tried to replace it with another bolt. Except I cannot get the hole in the bracket to line up with the hole in the manifold. The bracket wont go down far enough. I've tried pushing the top section further down the tube but it won't budge. I've tried brute strength and ignorance. I'm at a loss as to why it's not lining up as it doesn't appear to be bent, stretch or damaged in anyway.

Any thoughts?

The dipstick bracket has two holes in it, it is the lower hole that attaches to the manifold. A spacer about 20mm long fits between the dipstick bracket and the inlet manifold. It will not fit without the spacer which I guess got lost when the screw fell-out.

"it is the lower hole that attaches to the manifold."

Neither hole will line up.

Thank you very much,
time to phone around for salvage,
