MG MGF Technical - Disc noises on mgf

Hiya all again...

I have an annoying noise on my car now that sounds like a metal disc going round when i drive. i cant hear it when stationary, just when moving and it seems to slow when i'm in the period between changing gear but not completely stop, but its loud and clear when i'm driving in any gear....

could this be my clutch? i hope someone can shed some light on this for me as i wouldnt like to cause any further damage by continuing to drive it.

Thanks, Linz

Hi Linz

You can always try and work out if its clutch or not by finding a large hill and road, then whilst driving down the road simply put the clutch in thus disengaging the clutch, the engine will then idle but you will be still running at the same speed

you should then be able to hear the noise if its still there its likely to be the brakes/disks

yeah i'v tried listening while coasting already and its deffo still there.. my dad serviced my breaks for me and he did say the disk's could do with a change soon. i just didnt realise they were that bad!

Thanks Brian

Could be that the new pads have not bedded in fully to your worn discs and are catching on a raised wear ridge on the discs. Dave Kar-Solutions

There is a wear plate type thing on F brakes that's designed to howl before serious damage is done by metal on metal contact with the pad backplate and the disc.

When your Dad has serviced the brakes did he change the pads? If so you may have to look elsewhere, but if not, discs and pads are cheap, stick this into eBay, only £63 the entire set.

Or you could look out for some drilled / grooved upgrade discs and performance pads, that's what I did ;)

Hey guys,

The pad's had plenty of wear left in them so they were put back in, seems they were fairly new on the car before it was left to rot!! (prior to me purchasing her lol)

Thanks for that Russ, i'll check them out!!!

It may be not connected but I noticed a dull tapping noise from the rear nearside which varied with my speed, turned out out be a screw stuck in the tread.
