MG MGF Technical - DOOR PODS

HAS ANYONE USED TUE FOILTEC SPRAY [ OR ANY THING ELSE ] TO CHANGE THE COLUR OF THE DOOR PODS . I WANT THEM BLACK INSTEAD OF THE STANDARD EFFECT.. COLOUR ,AND ARE THEY EASY TO REMOVE , ALSO COULD THE SEATS BE DYED ,JUST THE HORRIBLE SCRIBBLE EFFECT AGAIN NOT THE WHOLE SEAT....ANY IDEAS.....
m e johnson

M E.,

Door cards are easy enough to remove, and the cloth part can be changed on its own.

But for all the hassle of trying to colour them, you may as well fit new seats and cards!.

Just got a 2001 interior, for my 96f for £150.

Looks far better than the old red cloth.
Mark

THATS A GOOD PRICE ,IF YOU DONT MIND ME ASKING WHERE DID U GET IT FROM .. THEY GO FOR A LOT MORE THAN THAT ON EBAY MEL.....
m e johnson

First up CAPS LOCK is considered SHOUTING - just a 'netiquette' thing. :-)

OK, to the point...

Mk1 door cards (no tweeters) are a single moulded unit with the fabric applied directly to the door card. It is therefore not possible to remove the door pod and replace, rather you need to remove the foam backed fabric and then cover the remnants with a preformed 'former'. This is how it is done by the specialist trimmers.

Mk2 (MY2K) door cards (with tweeters) do indeed have a removable door pod and these can simply be swapped over making life easier.

I agree though, it is probably better to simply swap the entire door card, they are cheap enough and if you go from a Mk1 to a MY2K then you gain a tweeter position and the cards look better (IMO).

thanks ,didn,t know about the caps thing. i might give the dye a go as i like the cards just not the coloured pods .....if they look a mess i can look for some newer cards as you suggest..........thanks ...........mel..

Typing in capitals is regarded as shouting and as such bad manners when sending messages on the internet?
Jim Kenny

Jim

Was considered 'bad manners' even before Gates decided to rebadge it and call it "The Internet".

Where I live, wearing a baseball cap indoors is also considered bad manners although I've been told that it is part of 'the new etiquette'.

I guess we all learn something new everyday.
JohnP

Yep, it's not really worth making a fuss over, but long postings in block caps can be a bit tiring on the eyes. Caps are used for EFFECT to EMPHASISE points and make things CLEARER <--- works well doesn't it! :-)

There are also, i suppose you would call them 'customs', for instance txt spk is gnrlly frwnd upn on ths frum as it mkes pstngs trcky 2 read, if U no wot i mean ;-) But it is acceptable on others and also in instant messaging.

Spelling errors are generally forgiven on here (mostly anyway) as there is no edit feature on this forum, but on others it can be a bone of contention.

Also, smileys (emoticons) can also help, but sometimes they can also be missleading - i know someone for instance who always reads this one --> ;-) <-- as sarcasm and gets offended, when i always mean it as maybe being a bit cheeky, or trying to get someone to read between the lines (if a subject is a bit sensitive for instance, and i can't be direct in words). There are also no real protocols in how you present them, :-) is the same as :) and :o) or =) or even =-) But on some forums there are automatic smileys that replace your text with a graphic, and in this case the way you draw them is important if you want to make use of this feature (but not on this BBS).

Ultimately none of this is very important, mnainly it is about being polite and it helps get your points across. Given that this forum has a reasonably large international membership, some of which do not have English as thier first language, accuracy can make the difference between getting the answer you want and one that leads you up the garden path.

SF <---All said with a :-) and not intended to cause any :-( or >:-(

BTW, always wanted to ask what LOL and other such isms mean?
Paul

Took me a while to figure out the odd punctuations people had at the end of sentences when I first came onto the BBS way back when: what is a colon, hyphen and a closing parenthesis supposed to mean? Tilt your head to the left and you see the smilie face! :-)

This internet speak is another world sometimes... LOL
Rob Bell

LOL = Laughing Out Loud
ROFL = Rolling On the Floor Laughing
ROFLMAO = ROFL my ar5e off

FWIW = For What It's Worth
IIRC = If I Recall Correctly

So many more, but I think that these are the most commonly used?
Rob Bell

AFAIK - as far as I know
IMHO - in my humble opinion (some people drop the humble ;-)
Dave Livingstone

Some more...

HTH = Hope This Helps
IMO = In My Opinion (i am not very humble! LOL)
AFAIC = As Far As I'm Concerned

And the immortal:

TADTS = They All Do That Sir!

Seem to have heard that one a lot from various dealerships!

SF = Scarlet Fever a.k.a. Andrew Phillips
SF = Safety Fast (there is a thread about this magazine on the General board at the moment - i have found it a bit confusing, lots of SF's everywhere and very few of them relating to me!)
Scarlet Fever

Oh and you know what VVC stands for, but the 1.8i version of the F is sometimes referred to as an MPi.

MPi = Multi Point Injection

I'm sure i've missed loads, but this thread has been hijacked enough by me!

And there was I thinking somewhat dubiosuly that LOL was "lots of love"... I have been enlightened!

Another abreviation worth mentioning is MS. On this BBS it does not usuallly refer to that arch-deamon Bill Gates and his products. Instead it is usually a reference to Mike Satur, a purveyor of shiny bits for your F/TF (and emptier of your wallet/purse). ;-)

I won't even mention that other dreaded acronym, HGF...

ok ok .........but what about the pods has anyone ever dyed them. appologies again for the caps thing,to be honest i can,t type [ only one fingered ] i wondered what the caps lock button was.........sore finger mel...
m e johnson

Sorry Mel LOL!

I don't know anyone who has dyed a poor pod before - although re-trimming is possible, as MS has shown on many occasions.

Which door cards do you have? The ones with the rectangular handle surround, or the ovals? (M1 and MY2000 respectively)
Rob Bell

thay are the ones with the rectangle handle surrounds. i want to keep it mk 1, its the pod colour i dislike. i was hopeing i could dye them black and then get some blk leather or cloth seats.foiltec do a spray that can colour fabric, but from what i gather the pods are not removable ,i could imagine id make a mess with them in situ. i was hopeing for some easy brush on arts and craft type stuff. but don,t know if theres such a thing ..........ta ...mel....
m e johnson

I'm afraid if you've got fusion cloth door pods it will be next to impossible to dye them black.

Best option may be to peel off the material and recover in leather...
Rob Bell

rob ,had a brain wave when bored at work and used some left over black renovo hood treatment. i am really pleased with the results, will put one more coat on tommorrow. it has still got the pattern on as the coloured stitching was done in the opposite direction, but they are now jet black. i know it isn,t made for the interior, but if all goes ok i will do the pattern on the seats for the all black look. one more thing, just got some jag chrome door pins of a guy who has loads on ebay. they are well good, and match the jag ashtray i got from him. i,m hoping to fit them tommorrow. thanks for your help mel..
m e johnson

ooops ........ yea you was right rob ,it does,t look as good in the daylight it has just darked the black.and made the colour slightly darker ,guess i,ll recover at some stage. door pins went ok and look fab ..................
m e johnson

Mel I have the MK1 door panels, the same as yours, what I did was to take a stanley knife and cut the entire cloth covered section out from the actual panel, effectively leaving a big hole in the panel! Next was to spray glue my chosen covering over the old centre removed section and glue it all niceley on the back. Finally superglue the now recovered pod back into its original place and, although it sounds like it won't work and stay attached, trust me it does. It also looks really good. Give it a go, if you mess it up just give Victoria a call and get some new ones or phone around breakers yards, you'll pick up replacement MK1 panels very cheaply as people generally want the newer MK2 ones.

thanks ian i was thinking if i dare try something on the same lines when i had them off the car on saturday ,now i wonder if the wife has got a old leather coat or something similiar at the back of the wardrobe, she won,t miss for a while, she has just gone out...........................
m e johnson

You could try that Mel, just make sure you hide the Stanley knife before your wife finds the holes in her coat...........!
