MG MGF Technical - Drilled & grooved 304mm discs anyone?

Hi all,

Am in contact with a company that produce drilled & grooved discs, sounding them out as a possible supplier of drilled &/ grooved discs for the AP 4-pot calipers (Trophy & TF160). With the OE discs being a touch on the pricey side (!?!), there's plenty of room for a saving even when extra drilling/grooving work goes into them.
As usual the final price is driven by quantity, but if you'd be interested in principle in a pair in the near future let me know; hopefully an attractive price can be negotiated.

If you wouldn't want drilling or grooving, but a better price on direct replacements then still let me know - all part of the same production process.

Cheers

Hi Mike,

My 304mm discs are likely to need replacing soon (I wonder why ;-) I'm into grooved rather than drilled :-) or even cheaper standard.

It's probably worth posting this in the MGoT Pit Lane as well - here - http://pitlane.mgs-on-track.com/forumdisplay.php?f=21

Drop me an email to let me know more about what you're up to.

Cheers,

Mike, this may be a good opportunity to look at this - up until now, MG Rover hadn't released the patents on the disc design to enable aftermarket factors to start producing these discs.

I can't see that you'd be chased under the current situation: I am sure they're going to be more worried about the Chinese auto industry ripping off copies of Rover 75s, if the current row over ownership of IPRs is to be believed! LOL

Good luck - and I'll be interested once I get around to fitting these brakes to my F :o)

Grooved discs are far better than drilled which can suffer from cracking.

My thinking exactly, Rob ;-) All I needed was to find a manufacturer that wouldn't necessarily need the tooling specs to produce an identical item. One day presumably AP will be allowed to sell the rotors direct, but if an interim source can be negotiated, phenomenal stopping power shouldn't injure the wallet too much. And if they can drill or groove them to individual requirements, that's a bonus.
Their minimum volume reqs are still unclear, but I though it would be worth a stab (or should I leave the stabbing to you medical types?)
Mike Hankin

<chuckle!> Okay, I'll keep with the stabbing!

Keep us posted on progress Mike - you'll probably need orders for 5 to 10 car sets if my experience with brake pads are anything to go by.
