MG MGF Technical - Driving with one nut missing...

How safe or stupid is it to drive my F with one front wheel nut missing for a day until a new one is received to replace the one I rounded off?

I'll be driving slowly and not twonking it on a motorway... All the other 3 on that wheel are torque'd up to the correct Nm setting.

Cheers

Chris.

ps. I'm happy to receive the odd "you prat" reply :-)

The obvious answer is no don't do it.

However, the cars weight is transferred to the wheel by the hub that locates into the centre of the wheels recess. The four studs and nuts are to hold the wheel flush with the hub, not to support the weight and to stop the wheel from spinning on the hub, when braking and accelerating. So IMO I would say no probs if careful,

Ignore the accelerating bit, front wheel not rear

I was quite worried when I read the title - thought you had suffered a nasty removal.

Would I drive with a wheel nut missing? No way but I'm quite cautious - except when on the Triumph.
John Ponting

Generally I'd be happier missing a rear nut.

The nuts and lugs are under stress when cornering, so keep that at a minimum as well as the braking and accelerating.
And your wheels will be out of balance.

Personally I wouldn't do it - don't halfords stock wheelnuts - even some locking wheelnuts?

Got some coming from B&Gs... should be with me in the morning... don't worry I'll take all your advice and leave the car where it is for tonight - safely under my carport :-)

Or I could get the hacksaw out to cut off the stupid mild steel cap that is on MGR wheel nuts I found out as of yesterday (the caps came off two other nuts so they've just got the bare nuts on - down to 18mm socket) Although I am going to replace all 3 naff ones when the new ones come through.

Cheers

Chris.

Sounds like it's a bit late for you Chris, but if anyone else has this trouble I've got a bag of F wheelnuts in the garage. They're the normal MGR ones with the shiney (soft) covers but if anyone finds they need a replacement I'd be happy to send some out.
