MG MGF Technical - ECU help

I have a 97 mgf 1.8vvc I am trying to get an on board diagnosis device but have been looking frantically but come up empty handed, some peolple believe that only 2001+ year cars are able to do this because they have EOBD (and EOBD2) ecu's. Has any one else looked into this or can give me any advice in where to look?

Many thanks in advance.

About a million MG an Rover and early Land-Rover Freelander owners try the same since ten or what years
;)

The *Testbook* for older none EOBD2 is MGR only and not available with _normal_ ways.
There are other, you find in the archives of this BBS.
But count in app 2000++ quid for the assy.

I'm afraid, not much help.

Kevin, unfortunatley, Dieter is right as usual. Only post 2001 cars have the OBD2 compliant sockets used for diagnosis. Your 1997 car is too old for this. Only Testbook - the Rover proprietory diagnosis equipment - will be able of reading the fault codes from MEMS1.9 and MEMS2J.

There may be specialist companies looking into making an after market reader - but there is nothing on the market at present as far as I know.

Autodiagnos Ltd Stockport have Multi-Tester-Pro which they claim handles early MGF. Don't know exactly how much but not inexpensive.

:o) I stand corrected!

Any more info on this Ken?
Rob Bell

They have a web site
http://www.autodiagnos.com/products/multitesterpro.html
I contacted the local sales guy who sent me a brochure but quickly decided it was likely to be too expensive for single car occasional use.
I keep trying to persuade myself to have a go at cracking the protocol. The best way is an hour or so with Testbook and an eavesdropper as it talks to an ECU. Or who has a spare ECU, 5AS and loom to make a complete simulator????

Ken Waring

Ken, Erik has access to a working (?) Testbook - but that may necessitate you crossing the channel to use it.

Spare 5AS and MEMS plus loom? Sorry I haven't - but I am sure that someone somewhere will have some of these components?
