MG MGF Technical - Electric boot release

I bought one of these solinoid type boot electric boot release systems but the instructions are vague! I need to get a wire from the boot into the passenger compartment, the instructions say 'follow the wiring harness into the car'. I am OK on the technical side but getting the wire through looks impossible to me unless I dismantle most of the rear shelf trim etc. Help!

John

Undo clips holding rear of hood to car. Tip the hood forwards. The rear shelf trim is a lift out carpet. Under that is the engine access panel held by 10 (or 11) small bolts. Undo, lift out, find engine, see wiring loom clearly. Only takes a few minutes to get into the engine bay.

The toughest part will be to get the wire thru the rubbere grommet separating the engine compartment to the passenger compartment. Use a pencil to enlarge the opening in the grommet, the wire can then be taken thru next to the pencil and when you have enough cable tru take away the pencil at there will again be a good fit around the cable loom. The rest is rather easy getting the cable underneath the trim all the way forward to where you will position the push button.
Surely Dieter has something around this on his Tech-Site...

Hi John, I think you are right regarding the wiring - you have to remove the parcel shelf trim in order to feed that wire through the grommet that Carl alludes to. As JohnP mentions, this is pretty simple. In addition to his clear words, there are some pix on http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/engine_cover.htm

Many thanks for the guidance, its been a great help!

John, when it's all working I'd be interested to know if you think it worth the effort. I miss the 'keyless' boot release about twice a month and am still considering the kit.
JohnP

Fitted one to my F and then almost as soon as I got My TF fitted another kit.

Getting the wires round seems the hardest part, except maybe getting the link onto the handbrake fitting.

But so usefull, I would not be without it.

As it happens I am working on an "upgrade" which if I get it working will allow you to choose to unlock the boot from the remote as you unlock the car.

A bit short on time at the moment as I am busy fittin a new kitchen.

Paul

P.S. if anyone is interested in the remote option, drop me an email and I will try to keep you in touch with the development.

In the boot?

That certainly sounds interesting Paul! How would this work?
Rob Bell

Hi Ted,

If it was in the boot it would be a LOT easier, as I am sure there wouldn't be quite the mis-match of quality for the existing fittings.....

Rob, The idea is to use a combination of the buttons to trigger the opening/unlocking of the boot as well as the doors. That way it's optional as you unlock. I have an idea on how this can be done (with minimal mods) but it will take a bit of R&D on my part.
