MG MGF Technical - Emerald and others: cooling

Hey,

Is the engine bay fan controlled by the Emerald (or other aftermarket ECU) with the use of the Ambient Air Temperature Sensor. Or how is it operated on these cars.

Just asking as the EFI ECU isn't using the fan

Cheers,
Erik

Emerald are currently writing a software update so that the M3D ECU, that hasn't had the ability to control the engine bay fan up until now, can switch the fan on as required.

Most replacement ECUs do not control the fan: we can probably thank the Elise development heritage for this, as the Elise does not have nor require this fan.

Doesn't really help you Erik: might be worth contacting PTP or the manufacturer of your EFI ECU for help. Either that, or have the fan controlled separately from the ECU...

I allready did contact PTP. The reply:

I have spoken with our Project management engineer, the RT Sport 165 EFI ECU will not control the engine bay fan, only the radiator cooling fan. If you have any concerns on the operation of the engine bay fan, I suggest that this is investigated as soon as possible to ensure the system is working correctly.

We have not investigated the outcome if the sensor fails and the standard ECU turning on the cooling fan on permanently.

So I guess they should know how important it is... but they haven't a solution, right ?

Could have been nice if this was printed somewhere in small letters on the fitting manual. Don't wanna think about it if this would harm the engine.
Erik

I recently had this conversation with Emerald. There is software which you can change the on / off values but I couldn't get the fan to run. Apparently there is no hardware, so there advise was to connect the radiator fan & engine bay fan relay's together so they both came on when the coolant temp was high.

This would be better than nothing, but I haven't done it yet.

Hi Erik,

I'd just go the easy way and get a Bi-metal Thermostat with applicable hysteresis. They almost will do with +-5 degress in a range similar to the existing old NTC sensor and installed function of the old ECU.
Manufacturer is ELMWOOD. (*belongs* to Honeywell)

Look at Maplin like electronic parts suppliers for anything in range of 90°C.
They almost open when reaching the temperature, though.

Don't laugh, but you can source as first aid from electric kitchen oven spares (adjustable of course) :)

Wire it to switch a relay add a hand-switch to power down when you leave the car anywhere for a longer time.
