MG MGF Technical - Emerald ECU

!!! Went away for Xmas, eagerly awaiting a new IACV to arrive for the UK. Got back form my break, YAY new part has arrived.

Have never had to play with the Emerald ECU before and previous owner had not supplied the software disk and cannot locate it.

Downladed a version from Emerald site, powered it up

"require ver 0.3...)

Is there any one with this version about, or is it possible to update without having to remove the ECU and send it for a firmware upgrade.

Unit serial is 42290

The software disk contains the 'application' software for the PC; the current version is 'Version 1.1 revision 7'available from the web.

I think you are referring to needing new software (image) for the ECU itself?

If so, I'd get in touch with Karl Paton at Emerald - he's the engineer that programs the system, and is very helpful.

Some while back he sent me a new image to load onto the Emerald; quite easy to do, but instructions must be followed exactly.

Thanks, I know I've tried the 1.0 rev8 and pretty sure I tried the 1.1 as well, same message, "needs ver 0.3, ending communication.."

Have sent a email off to emeraldM3D@aol the same day I started this thread, still awaiting a reply, unless there is another email address for them that I didn't find on their website.

Give Dad an email (website is mgparts dot clear dot net dot nz, contact details are there) we've still got a few Emerald's on the shelf (and probably sold the ECU you've got) so might be able to help with software.

Can the 1998 MGF(no VVC) fit it ?
Because the original vacuum pipe is used in the ECM , how do the new ECU control IACV ?
How do the ECU and ECM connect ?

Stu, many thanks for your email, looking forward to getting the new IACV in and my "blanking plate" out, can't say it's been doing much for the idle, especially on rapid closing of the throttle ;)
If you were wondering, the plate consists of a bit of 6mm ply with a "calibrated" 3.2mm hole to let air past the butterfly with the throttle closed, obviously not much of a metered amount going past that.

Stu, what do you use to control Idle speed? IACV or mapped fuel/inj? My idle speed is still up around the 2000rpm mark, live adjustment screen shows IAC pos of 0. Beginning to wonder if the IACV is fine, or it is the signal from ECU to IACV that has failed along the way. Throttle Pot sensor climbs and decays with throttle input, so that works fine, maybe I should change the brown sensor also while my head is under the cover?

I'll be honest I'm not sure how its set up Andy as it was done on the rolling road by Dave Walker at Emerald.

I'll plug my laptop into my car tomorrow and send you a copy of my map so you can at least see where its all been set at.

Bearing in my I have a VVC with heavily tweaked head - 4-2-1 manifold and forged pistons etc it may be different to what you need but it may give you a few pointers..

I've managed to get the idle down to around 700 now. With the throttle blipped, it stays up a while before settling back down to idle, while driving, it's almost like flat shifting, with the foot of the throttle though. I'm guessing that will just be a idle control parameter that needs a bit of tweaking. Hopefully will have some $ saved once I return from a trip to the States end of next week.

I'm running a flowed VVC head (about 30% over standard, wish I could find the blimmin graphs!!!)
60mm throttle body, Mike Satur 4,2,1 exhaust system leading into a Camaro exhaust. Piper 285H cams, gulping air from 70mm ducting into 5 litre insulated cold air box, K&N filter. Air Con (Jap version) is off the belt but seriously considering putting it back on, or at least have a belt for it just in case.

Looking forward to the figures once it gets on a dyno that's for sure.

Yes, the Emerald M3D is a direct replacement for your existing MEMS1.9 ECU. It is plug compatible - in other words, you remove the existing plug from your car's existing ECU, and plug it directly into the Emerald :o)

It will require programming/ mapping. However, if your car is fairly standard, or even slightly modified, chances are that there is already an off-the-shelf map available for it.
