MG MGF Technical - Emissions test....

Is an MOT emissions test likely to produce slightly different results if the car has been sat around for 2 weeks doing nothing waiting to have bodywork repaired...

I ask as mine has just failed this and it has indeed been just sat around like this... I've heard that if you take it out for a good blast beforehand it may be more likely to pass the test? or am I dreaming? (is it still early after all).

Cheers

Cats don't work at all untill hot, properly until really hot. Modern car designs put the cat as close to the engine as possible to minimize the warm up time, the F needs a little warming, speak to the emmisions guy about getting it sniffed as soon as you roll up and take the car for a high revs blat.

Yes, this is good advice. Get the engine up to temperature, and then take the car for a long, hard drive, going to to the red-line in all the gears (where appropriate!!!) and that should help restore the cat to full operation.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the very helpful answers... but unfortunately I can't take it for a "high revs blat"... as I don't have the car... the MOT ran out on the 9th - in the middle of the bodywork repairs being done so I haven't actually had the car for two weeks...

So I guess, yeah, did they just start it up and do the emissions test straight away...

Rob,
I'm able to red line in the first 4 gears, how do you get the red line in fifth ?

Over a cliff? LOL But yep- you're right: red line for the first 4 gears! ;o)

Chris, you are able to drive your car without an MoT so long as you are taking it directly to an MoT testing station. So the answer is to get to that testing station in a 'hurry' ;o)

I thought they were supposed to check oil temperature - so the cat should be warm. How far off is the car on emissions ? The K series shouldn't have any problems passing the emissions test - but the two week layoff won't have helped - could you not take it away to be fixed (by 'making good progress') ?
Steve

Steve,

I'm awaiting the test results back in the morning to see what they need to do to get it to pass... please not a new cat...

Meanwhile, it's having a few other things done - some of which are under my warranty... which is nice...

Hi all,

usually on an otherwise sound engine it tends to be the HC content that is a bit high.
Probably the reason for this is that in U.K you have a limit of 200ppm for passing (I am told - correct? ) but on mainland Europe we have 100 ppm as the upper limit. This gives at least us a smaller margin to a fail BUT as noted above - a good blast with a hot catalyst usually works ! Over here the tester is "sooo pleased" if he can go for another short run and do the emission test over again ;o)

14 days and counting until the "Green Frog" is on the road after the winter sleep !
