MG MGF Technical - Engine bay fan

I have a question regarding the engine bay fan by the right hand side air intake: mine came on today as I had been on quite a long drive followed by some bumper to bumper trafic jams. I stopped the car with the fan still on and, to my surprise, I noticed when I put my hand next to the intake that the fan was actually blowing air OUT of the engine bay rather than INTO it. Is this normal or should I add to my list of problems a wrongly connected engine bay fan?

>blowing air OUT

*virtual* only.
Put a piece of newspaper in front of the grill and see what happens :)

Dieter,

I have checked it already: the fan blows air out! Is this normal or not?

Per,
we had this discussion several times in the last years.
Did you fully cover with a large piece of paper ?

If it still blows out, then I think you have the first one I know which blows out.

However from my humble opinion this mad thing is sowhat of anyway... :)

Adds weight, does nothing but *trying* to cool the fuel lines.

Now where did I put me scalpo??

As Dieter says the fan gives the impression of blowing rather than sucking but if you can try a smoke test I think you will find it does 'suck'.

Dieter: he's no engine bay fan fan

Mine sucks and it just failed its MOT! First MOT failure I've had on any vehicle since testing was introduced.

Either the MGF is prone to MOT failures or I've been extremely lucky over the past nn years.

Actually not a major problem - just a high CO reading on fast idle; 0.39 against max of 0.30. Took car for a fastish (i.e. highly illegal) thrash to clear it out but still failed on retest.

Most likely the CO sensor in manifold but could be the cat - think the sensor is warranty but cat isn't (warranty expires on Mar 31st & car is booked in for that day).

Per,

Use the paper test. I needed it myself before I could believe it it was sucking the air into the bay. You will be surprised (or at least I hope, 'cause otherwise something is wrong or different on your/a TF ?).

Cheers,

Thanks guys, you were right: the fan came on again today so I jumped out and put my hanky in front of the vent and it did get sucked onto the mesh!

I guess owning an MG just makes you paranoid... ;-)

Cheers,

No fan on that side so yes normal (UK Spec cars).

Nothing wrong with it the engine management ECM controls it operation and it can run up to 10 minutes with the engine/ignition swithed off
