MG MGF Technical - Engine Emissions Warning Light

Hi,

On driving down south this morning the engine emissions light (amber) came on, and won't go off. The manual says I should take it in to the dealer - but it's out of warranty... Any suggestions? Is this an MGR job, or would MGFC/Mike Satur be able to sort?... Or is it more likely a sensor which needs twiddling (as is quite often the case with Fs!)

Cheers,

Andy

Most(all) MOT centres can test emmissions to see if there really is a problem. Tracking down which one is slightly harder. One is expensive and one is cheap but can never remember which way round - passed on all my receipts when I changed cars a couple of months ago.

Not convinced you can twiddle sensors - the connectors can be twiddled and sometimes it is just a dirty terminal.

See Thread "Warning Light and Dodgy Idling" below.
You may have one or two Sensors, pre and post MY2000.

MS should be able to sort you out or you could swop your Sensor/s with a mate's F.

Ok, so any ideas where these sensors are, so I can check the connections? I'm not liking the sound of 240 quid for 2 sensors!

One sensor is in the exhaust manifold, the other is located after the cat.

IIRC, once the MIL has illuminated, it has to be reset with testbook. Testbook will also read the fault codes, so this ought to resolve where the problem is originating from.

Any MGR dealer will have this equipment. I think that Brown and Gammons and the MGFC also have access to Testbook, and would probably prove cheaper than a main dealer...

Booked into Mike's on Thurs, I'll let you know the outcome... I only had a new exhaust put on it a few months ago... apparently there was some problem with the fitting. I hope this has nothing to do with it.

Kev says,
If it is only the Emissions light, Remove light and throw it over left shoulder.

Well, I found it what it was. A few months ago I got a new exhaust fitted by a garage down the road [Big Mistake]. They had the usual problems with the cat bolts, and it took them ages (and melted the bumper slightly under 1 of the finishers which was annoying, but only noticed a few weeks later when washing the car).

Anyhow, when trying to get the old exhaust off, there's a good chance they buggered the ceramic matrix of the cat, which has now fallen apart, hence the emissions light.

Just got a new stainless one fitted by Mike Satur - £300 total inc VAT. Ouch. Car seems to drive a lot smoother though. And the service was excellent.

I'm off to count the coppers in my piggy bank to see if I've got enough for a beer later.
