MG MGF Technical - Engine noise

I have recently bought my first MGF VVC but with a high pitched squeal/squeak from the engine when revved. However there is no noise when idling or when you don't put your foot down!
Having investigated this when I brought it home, it sounds like its from the cylinderhead/camshaft area and not from the fan belt or timing belt area.
It doesn't appear to affect the cars performance but the noise is annoying and could possibly get worse.

Anyone got ideas what it could be and possible cost to repair?

Could it be an air leak around the throttle body, if you have a piece of tubing handy use it as a stehescope (sp?) to find the source of the noise.

Water pump???

If it definitely is not from the 'fan belt area' then it definitely isnt the fan belt tensioner bearing starting to go. Mine presented very similar symptoms and was a relatively cheap fix replacing the tensioner.

Paul, although the sound doesn't appear to be from the belt-end of the engine, this is where I think you should start your investigations, as noise sources can be deceptive. Plus, a squealing alternator belt or a failing water pump/ tensioner as Sam and Charles suggest, are cheap to replace now, but if left to fail, bowel-looseningly expensive :o(

If however the squeal is definitely coming from the VVC cams, then I would suggest some expert help, unless you're feeling confident about dealing with VVC cams and have the necessary tools.

Thanks all for your advise, I've decided to take to a garage and let them sort it. Got the car pretty cheap to allow for any "hidden costs". So will let you all know what the repairs are and at what expense!

Hi everyone,
Just to give feedback on the noise from the car. In the end I took it to a garage and at one point there was 4 of us trying to detect where the noise was coming from.
Each of us decided that it was the flexy exhaust but still uncertain.
I paid £144 to have it replaced and guess what....the noise has gone, yeepee!! Now revs like a good-un.

Thanks again all, for your advise given. I have included this feedback in the general section on the Engine/exhaust fault from Stuart, he has got the same problem.

cheers Paul....
