MG MGF Technical - Exhaust bolts

Anybody know what size and where to source the nuts n' bolts for fitting a new rear silencer? The good old rip-off, I don't have a clue what I'm talking about, and to be honest don't really give a damn, boys at the local dealership wont give me any unless I buy a new Cat, Eh?
The fact that I bought the car from them & spend £££'s with them every year on servicing & the likes doesn't seem to be enough to warrant a new set. Oh yeah and they charged me 15p for a gasket for the oil sump!!!

cat saver nuts are the nuts in question. £15 +vat I think :)

They are 10mm nuts available in most DIY shops etc.

Some places will sell you zinc plated bolts or you could get stainless steel nuts from good nut/bolt specialist. If you put 2 nuts on each stud then the stud is protected from rust!!

OK, there seems to be a little confusion here.

The three main bolts for the rear silencer are part of the cat.

The catalyst has three threaded studs welded to the connection flange, the silencer has three corresponding holes in the connection flange and they are joined together with three mild steel nuts. Basically, there are no bolts at all, the threaded studs are part of the cat.

The nuts go rusty very quickly, eventually they become fused to the threaded studs of the cat meaning that it is easy to shear the studs off of the cat when trying to remove the nuts. This entails replacing the cat (which is what i think your garage is trying to tell you).

There are alternatives, you can drill out the studs and replace them with nuts and bolts (preferably stainless steel). Or, if your F doesn't have a cat sensor (Mk1's don't), you can fit a cat bypass pipe instead - this is just a straight tube that replaces the catalyst - note, your F won't pass an emmissions test with a bypass fitted.

Whatever you do, over time the rust problem will re-occur unless you do something about it. The double nut method above is better than nothing but does not provide full protection to the stud/bolt. Mike Satur does some blanked off long nuts which sheath the thread and thus offer far greater protection, they are cheap and effective. Brown and Gammons also do a similar set. These are highly recommended.
