MG MGF Technical - Exhaust fitting

Hi All,
I want to put a backbox on my 96 vvc mgf. Is it true, that the bumper has to be taken off in order to do this. If this is true wot happens if my bumper get broken when it is taken off.
gee

Gee

I'm sure it doesn't need to come off to replace silencer.

What happens if it breaks? If you break it you pay for it! If somebody else breaks it you threaten them with a pick-axe handle until they pay:-)

Nope, this isnt true. You can remove and fit a new back box without the bumper being removed, No probw. however, it is a right pain in the a**e, as i found out first hand. The studs on between the CAT and the backbox need to be seperated in order to free the back box and swap it around. This is where the 'fun' starts as the nuts WILL (if original) be in such a state that they will not turn and will need to be cut off, then the studs will need to be drilled out in order to beable to fit your shiney new back box. Put it this way, i allowed myself about 3 hours for the job. 1 full day,3 evenings and a trip to my mates work to use an accetylene torch, the job was done. Not trying to put you off, just take my advice and get a garage to do it, it will save you one real big head-ache. Trust me mate,i'm speaking from experiance here.

ps mines a 1997 model, so chances are your nuts will be worse than mine......... if you know what I mean.

Thanks alot. I think im going to ge elite to do it. Ive allways had a remus exaust from elite on all my cars. I hope they do one for the mgf.
gee

Good idea, putting the new one on is no bother , like i say, its just getting the old one off makes you want to destroy things with the nearest hammer!

Gee,

Get a set of stainless steel CAT nuts from Mike Satur.

They are only a few quid, and will save a lot of heartache the next time.

Just replaced my original 98 back box, took three hours with the car on ramps and I had to saw off the drivers side mounting bracket due to the amount of corrosion on the nuts.

Didnt have a problem with the Cat, I replaced that too and I have put Mike's stainless nuts on to protect the new bolts with a good blob of copper grease to boot. The nuts on the original cat had completely corroded through.

I agree if you are keeping the original Cat get a garage to do it and sit back and watch the fun begin.
