MG MGF Technical - Exhaust noise??

Just purchased a 2000 MGF, was top spec, no problems in history, but seems to be making a funny rattling noise from one of the exhaust pipes. Also sounds when my foot eases off the excellerator, does anyone think this is a potential problem??

Help please as I have no tech knowledge.

Cheers.

Two possibilties IMO,
a. CAT assembly broken and rattling
b. Broken baffle.

neither life threatening, shouldn't cause an MOT failure.

replace CAT with bypass tube, and while you're at it, visit the dark side, and fit a Daytona exhaust (or similar :-)) )

Cool.

I'm a novice to this kind of thing so all help appreciated. Where can I visit the dark side by the way?? Also, Would any of those problems come up in a service, which is booked for sat. Will they cost a bomb??

A broken exhaust baffle you could probably live with, as it doesn't really cause any problems other than the noise. If you want to replace, then you can either replace with a new standard exhaust, or choose a stainless steel sports exhaust. I've got a Mike Satur Daytona back box that I am very happy with - but there are plenty of others on the market, including the Phoenix that the MGFC sells.

If you need a new catalyst, then that you will need to replace in order to get through the MoT. Replacement will cost the thick end of 300 quid. A cat bypass will get rid of the rattle, give you plenty of grin inducing exhaust noise, but will fail an MoT and won't deliver much in the way of a power advantage.

What many people do here is to have a catalyst that they store for the year, and only dig it out for the MoT and the rest of the time run with the bypass tube fitted...

Dom ,
The Dark Side is not a place to visit more a force that surrounds an MG enthusiast, but you could try http://www.mikesatur.co.uk/
to help you on your way to feeling the power of the darkside "maa ha ahh aha ha ha"

Hi Dom

I've had a similiar problem on my '98 F. I replaced the back box, only to find out it was the CAT.

Rob is correct, Cats go for about £300-00 upwards, but I managed to get one off Ebay for £87-00! It came with an invoice and the gasket set.

Try E-car Parts Ltd's shop on Ebay: http://stores.ebay.co.uk/E-CAR-PARTS-LTD

They have 1500+ positive Ebay rating.
