MG MGF Technical - Exhaust Rattle - Advice Please?
Typical, I get the HT leads sorted, drive the car away and the exhaust starts to rattle. Not whilst driving, just at idle speed. Before I take it to the garage again for inspection I wanted to know what people had done with the metal band surrounding the silencer box, as the MS Daytona system has a smaller silencer and there is a gap at the back by the right hand cat bracket. It doesn't look like anything's loosened and it hasn't rattle before, so I'm not sure whether it is this or the flexi pipe or something has come lose in the silencer box. Its difficult to tell without getting right underneath. The car's a MY2000 VVC. Any answers or ideas gratefully received. Cheers A very hacked off DJ :( |

On my Daytona the strap has been removed! Other things to check rattling are the exhast and catalyst heat sheilds, these can come loose or crack by excessive speed bumps and rattle badly. |

Same here, strap removed when fitting daytona. and yes same again, shield on cat came loose, and was removed. |

The saga continues: Duff HT leads which were fixed yesterday and the caused misfire and subsequent loss of power, but also caused fuel to be burnt in the cat and guess what, the cats failed. Technically this is not convered by warranty, but as the HT leads were and they caused it my friendly MGR garage are going to fight my corner and see what happens. By the way anyone no anyone with Cats in stock?? The garage are more than happy to fit me an aftermarket cat if MGR can't supply. Cheers DJ V679 SVV Bored of going to garages :( Good job I'm going to look at some Caterhams at the weekend!! :o) |

From recent threads here it seems that the OEM cat is way overpriced. Have a look in the archives - I seem to remember that some people had third party cats fitted for less than half price. I think Mike Satur sell some. Cheers Spyros |

Thought I'd bring the saga to a close and say some garage's believe good customer service is important. Well Head Office MGR decided to stick to the letter of their warranty and will not replace the cat FOC, but as I've had most of my modifications fitted and the car serviced at Rowes they are going to pay for 50% and they have found me a new cat which is being fitted tomorrow. OK so I'm still out of pocket, but at least its good to see that customers matter to them and they are prepared to fork out without being asked. Gold Star to you Rowes MG |

Glad you got it sorted out. I concur, no strap needed for an MS Daytona. One way to check if the cat is at fault, replace (temporarily) with a bypass tube and see if the noise dissapears. Personally i would have suspected the flexi pipe, these are a fairly common failure and do produce a rattle or a buzzing noise. Assuming no external damage, generally the internal concentric rings fail causing the noise with no obvious cause from the outside (maybe some slight discolouration of the mesh, like it has been getting hot). SF Definately the Cat, got it fixed yesterday and car is now a pocket rocket. Its amazing what new HT leads and a new cat does. Mind you I went and played with some Caterhams this morning...WOW and just come back from Thruxton where the Austin Healey Event was running. Very impressive site to see Aston Martins racing as well - DB7s,4s and 5s, although something tells me these guys have more money than sense!!! Cheers DJ |
