MG MGF Technical - Exhaust Wrapping??

Hi Guys

Just browsing the www.eliseparts.com site and found they had exhaust wrapping heat protective stuff, that is used to wrapp the mainfold etc to cut down on heat build up in the engine bay.

Any good for the f?

I've been thinking about that myself, but doing that could cause some damage (all IMO).

The heat produced by the combustion is the same with and without the wrapping. Isolating the manifold, keeps the heat somewhere; three options:
- engine
- exhaust
- out of the exhaust system

We don't want to heat up the head much more, do we ?
So a fast exit of the hot gasses will be required.

Cheers,
Erik

Mark, what benefit would you be looking for?

The Elise lads use it on their 4-2-1 aftermarket manifolds, which flow exhaust gases extremely well. But they're made of stainless steel, and the pipes run rather too close for comfort to the alternator. It's not been unheard of for alternators to melt next to these manifolds.

With the wrap on, heat is then transferred to the next part of the exhaust system after it: the cat and back box.

No problem - unless you routinely thrash your car, and then park in a field of sun-dried knee-high grass.... :oO

Would there be any benefit to wrapping a standard manifold? No, nothing compared to cost outlay IMO.

Hi all,
i have some bad experience with wrapped exthaust mainfold on another car (before the "F" era !) Got some nasty cracks where the mainfold was welded. Most probably to the extra heat. But this was on a car freqwently doing track-days...

Ok points taken

It was just a thought:)

I may be wrong but hasn't Scarlet got exhaust wrap on her manifold.
