MG MGF Technical - Expansion Cap

Just a word of warning. She's been loosing a very small amount of water over the last few months. Did the tissue neck scarfe around the cap to see if it was coming from there, and yes it was.

Got a new cap from Rover and fitted. 18 miles later my expansion tank was empty. Re-filled and put my old cap back on, every thing back to normal with another trip to Rover parts dept. planned.

Anyone else had a new dodgy cap? Is it a common problem?

Richard

I've heard of it but not specific to MGF. daughters Rover 416 (could even be the same cap?).

Did the new one come in a small box ?
I would be curious to know for sure if it is a new one.
Erik

Richard - did you just tie a paper tissue around the cap to see if it gets damp? I may give this a shot.

Not sure that it is a common problem, but there have been dodgy batches of caps in the past...
Rob Bell

Sorry for the late reply, our connection is on/off at the mo.

The caps came loose. I bought two but immediately lost one of them.

The tissue stays dry (heat from the engine, I guess) but it gets a green tinge from the antifreeze.

Noticed a 10mm drop in coolant on the Treffen, swapped the cap and all was well (i carry a spare). Good tip about the tissue Rich :-)

Had a research in last year about the dodgy batch problem.

The right hand valve seat is from an old dodgy leaking.
The left shows a well formed seal ring pressing.
Tooling had been worn obviously and they marked the newer with a white paint dot for about one year.

Anyway, if the Rob's tissue trick shows a lot of coolant scaping, then I'd recommend looking immidiately for Fusé No. 2 (front fan fuse) in the underbonnet fuse box.
