MG MGF Technical - Exploded coolant pipe

Help - Bang lots of steam continued.

Can anyone help identify the exploded coolant pipe.

I placed a message on Sunday on BBS about a large bang and staem and two home. No local mechanic would look at MGF (too specialised ) so I have resorted to doing it my self.

Its turned out to be an exploding coolant pipe. Its a complex piece of rubber plumbing just to the side of the distributor. A metal pipe comes from the engine just below the distribuor and joins this rubber pipe, the rubber pipe has a also a rising rubbber pipe. Putting aside the rising joint for the moment the pipe connects to the engine and then travels toward the passenger bulkhead thne moves down where it looks like it joins a double ended joint (only one end).

The rising part comes up and then joins another pipe. Its looks lke part 13 on the deiter site.

The rising part has parted company with the lower part that travels down.

Does anyone know what the heck this is, and what the part number is and where I could get a replacement. Part of this complex pipewor connects to a switch or at least a small regtangular block which has an electrical cable attached.

The large bang was this rising part actually coming completly away. Is this hard to replace and should I get new hose clips, and other hoses as well ? and has anyone else had a similar problem

Thanks for your patience

Brian, sounds rather like the hose failure that Ted had on his car: http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/Treffen2003/day%205/day5_06.jpg

Brian, think Carlo has spotted the culprit. They are about £35.Check the condition of the other hoses and maybe change these for peace of mind with the associated clips. Not rocket science to change only awkward.Good luck.

Carlo,

If you look at the part the guys holding like a capital letter 'L' its now in two parts it completly broken away leaving the 'L' part and the rest.

Ended up doing it my self and managed to get the part £27 and 2 litres of coolant.

But what a bugger getting the bloody pipe of the bottom hoses. Two bottom hoses run through the transnission tunnel (under the ashtray) to the rad. The hose that broke connects to the hose from the passenger compartment. Had to put the car on axle stands to get underneath but no leverage and pipe would not shift. Ended up cutting it at the top and then cutting the replacement in the same place, and then adding a new joint. This shoud hold and for any new owner there will be joint thats not shown on any manual. Bled the system from 3 points using dieters web site, and then ran the engine seems to be ok, got a lot of bubbles from the radiatir but none from heater and nothing from bleed point A, so will try again tomorrow
