MG MGF Technical - FAO: Rob Bell and Hanah Kim

Hi guys, just a quick note to ask if you both have your respective new exhausts fitted and if you are happy with them?

:-)

Hello SF.

Yes! I have Rob's ex-exhaust fitted on mine.
(haven't paid Rob yet, but will do in 2 days time)

Installation-

Rather difficult job as one stud was broken off and a bracket was missing. Had to weld a lot of metal and 2 nuts + new modified bracket. Took 4 hours.

Sounds-

Sounds bloody awesome! People call my car a little bear now. Mind you I haven't put the CAT back on yet, as to enjoy the noise a little more. I like it, but gets awkward with a passenger. Can only talk in certain RPM ranges. (resonance is pretty bad at 2000rpm)
Very deep growl on low, sounds differnet on high revs. I haven't done high reving much yet as it's been wet here. But sounds awesome.

Power-

Feels like that I have more torque than when I had the Superchip fitted. Now I don't have a Superchip, but have the exhaust instead. My wheel spun twice going a slightly uphill on a second gear at 4000ish RPM and 6000. That was on a dry road. So more torque!

Looks & alignment-

Alignment is almost there. Had to bend the bracket so many times to get it right. Plus had to get the left side of the hook a little higher by using some heat-resistant rubber hosing to increase the diameter of the hook.
But one tail pipe is longer than the other, and Rob tells me it was like that on his as well. So it's ok. Can fix it with finishers anyway.

Looks bloody ugly :-) No tail finishers are on, so getting them fitted on Tuesday. Quite cheap 20 pounds including VAT for both labour and the parts.
Oh and why isn't the exhaust shiny.. :(

Overall-

Quite happy with it, especially when Rob gave me such a bargain... thanks Rob! & Yimmy!

Hope this helped SF!

Glad you are pleased with it Hanah (i knew you would be the minute you heard it!)

TT Fxtreme exhausts always look pretty rubbish IMO, even when supplied with the (far too small) tailpipe finishers. The underside however i can appreciate for it's inginuity, it certainly has the smallest and simplest silencer box of any of the aftermarket items i have seen. The sound though, awesome deep rumble, more than worth the in-cabin resonances IMO (i am amazed you can hear the 'click' noise with the TT fitted!) :-)

I had a pretty good look at it when i tried to remove the rusty catalyst nuts and it looked in pretty good condition to me. Surprised Rob didn't clean it up for you though (shame on you Rob!) When i sold my SP ages ago i spent a good couple of hours with the 'bar keepers friend' polishing compound making it look respectable. First impressions when you openend the parcel must have been a bit iffy...

A rare item, especially as it is no longer in production (following the untimely demise of Mr Taylor). Also, there is a little cudos attached to it, as it was supplied for the Exhaust Tests in MG World magazine, so the article and rolling road data relates specifically to your exhaust. Furthermore, Rob liked it so much he didn't send it back! Hmmm, thinking about it now, that means i was involved with the original installation as well as the removal.

This is the reason for the lack of tailpipe finishers, it was important that it arrived in time for the tests and Trevor Taylor didn't have a chance to add the cosmetic items.

Anyway, i'm happy you are pleased with it (and i'm sure it is nice and shiney now!) :-)

(i am amazed you can hear the 'click' noise with the TT fitted!)

Haha.. SF, my hearing is really good. Honestly really good, but that TT is making it worse.. but getting used to the noise and don't have plan to fit the cat back yet! So you have read my thread? I don't know what's causing it.. it's not major so not bad, but want to know where it's coming from. I don't think I can hear them when I open the windows, so thinking maybe it's a broken cheetah on the driver's side or passengers.

Oh.. didn't know it had so much history behind this exhaust! Maybe I should tell the future buyer of the car (if I ever get to sell it)... :-D Very very special indeed. And another fact, that it doesn't come out anymore! No I Feel special!!

I think Rob didn't have enough time to clean it up and was already bubble wrapped from TechSpeed... it's still dirty right now. Is there anyway to make it look shiny? What could I use to do that? (It looks like a mild steel exhaust with dirt on it)
Is there actually way to shine it up?? [Rob the payment will be made tomorrow!]

To be honest, yeah I got a little scared when it was missing a bracket and a stud.. but my trusty mechanic fixed it all and it's on the car. :-)

Thanks Andy.

What exhaust is Rob having then?

Have Mike Satur's system on my car, with the single slash cut and rolled finishers. Sooo quiet! In fact quieter than any other MSD I've experienced. Not a problem though - I wanted the change.

Not sure why, but the polished s/s has already yellowed with heat (?!) Any suggustions as to how to rid of this? Otherwise very happy with it - seems to give a little more power at the top end than the TT. Nice.

The reason why Hanah's system was in such a state was because of lack of time - Hanah wanted it before the end of his holiday period and happily, mission was accomplished :o)
Rob Bell

:-D

Sure did Rob, mission accomplished!

please check your account tonight at about 1AM :-)
I will deposit the money in 12 hours from now on.

If you find some way of removing the yellowing let me know as I've got the exact same problem. Mind you a friend's Elise has exactly the same problem, so maybe its the type of metal used. It is as if it has been heated treated (remembering my school days metal work)

I must say though the exhaust gives a luurvley sound.

Cheers

Bikers have since time began tried to remove discolouration from exhaust pipes - without success!

Rob, please check your account in 24 hours. The payment has been made.
:-)

Thanks for the waiting. And also new tail finishers were added. They look awesome.

:-)
Hanah

Any pix Hanah? :o)
Rob Bell

I also have Mike's Daytona Exhaust, with stainless finishers.

Same problem with yellowing, but came up sparkling after a year of neglect, using...Autoglym.

Now i am not sure what autoglym polish it was (think it was just standard Autoglym car polish, will check.)

I personally was amazed at the result, came up like new.

However didn't last very long, were grubby looking within a couple of weeks.

Rob did you get my email and money?
:-)

Pix this weekend with my new headunit.
Hanah Kim

In the bank Hanah :o)

Look forward to seeing those pix mate :o)

Too bad Rob sold the exhaust... loved driving behind his car and it was in good combination with his license plate: ... RMB ... rumble

Happy kilometers Hanah !!
Erik

>>and it was in good combination with his license plate: ... RMB ... rumble<<

Nice one Erik! That might have to be the car's new nick-name! LOL

A 'rumble wagon' thought that was something else:-)

Thanks guys!

Maybe next time I visit the garage, I might fit the cat back on... what do you think Rob? It's getting too loud for my parents, they don't like it, while I am getting a lot of compliments from people in 30s..

:-D

Hanah Kim

Oh no, what euphemism is 'rumble wagon' then Ted? Not heard of that one...

Hanah - highly recommended to refit the cat :o) Still plenty noisy enough with it fitted - but hopefully a little more parent friendly LOL :o)
