MG MGF Technical - FAO Rob Bell ... or any other 'tyre guru' :-)

Rob,
I'm just back from your website, read the tyres section and was wondering if there's any update regarding the problem with using Goodyear F1 GSD3.
Dieter advised me about Toyo and someone told me about Pirelli P Zero Nero or Mchelin Pilot Exalto ...
So, any fresh news reagrding this tyres study / rating?
PS: this is for 16" rim 215/40 on a VVC
Thanks
Jerome

Jerome, no advise, but question of taste and what you like to spend. 80 EURO versus 103 EURO :)

Will you go for 6" rim 215/40 all four ?
Dieter

*g*
Just found Rob's tyre site updated :)

Dieter,

Danke schön for the 123pneus.fr link! Seems a good deal.
I will check the price for fitting the tyres on the rims now.

I don't know when Rob updated his website last time, that's why I was wondering if there were any news, especially regarding the ride with F1 GSD3

For the tyre size, I thought the mk2 VVC had 215/40/16 all around ... am I wrong? (I know my old mk1 mpi had 195 at the front and 205 on the rear wheels as far as I remember but in this case?)
Jerome

OK, I checked the workshop manual and here we go:

FRONT
185/55 R15 or 195/45 R16

REAR
205/50 R15 or 215/40 ZR16

I'll check the tyre size on 4 wheels next time I see the car :-/ Then, is it possible to have the same size on 4 wheels? Sorry if I'm asking about obvious things but I haven't been thinking MGF since a long time! lol
Jerome

Hi Jerome,

There isn't much more than I can add to what is written in that page. In my experience, changing all 4 tyres at the same time resulted in absolutely no problems for me using the GS-D3.

But I agree with Dieter, the Toyo T-1R looks to be a superb tyre.

The Pirelli P-zero is a tyre that we've not received any feed back upon - but I understand that the P zero C is a superb track tyre... :o)
Rob Bell

Jerome, the 215/40 all round were fitted to some cars, but MGR soon changed this. I had this set up on my F and found that the car suffered from tramlining.

Rob, I used the Pirelli PZero Assimetricos on my ZS180 for a time. I can thoroughly recommend NOT using these on that model. The tyres were okay in the dry, but even the slightest bit of damp and they started sliding - remember Pembrey?

I think we needed flippers for Pembry, but point taken Ralph! :o)
Rob Bell

Ralph,
Thank you for your feedback.
Could you please describe what you mean by "tramlining"?
Something related to tramway I presume?

Dieter,
You convinced me, Toyo are really cheap!
Jerome

Goodyear F1 D2 are still available as bought some 2 weeks ago from mitcheldever for approx £148 for 2.

They offered me both D2 and D3 but recommended D2 and I was having my existing D3 replaced due to wear and the MOT.

One thing I did notice was how different the car felt with the D2 as there was no tramlining and the car felt much nicer to drive.

The D3 where good but only when run in and plenty of tread left, probably because they are a stiffer tyre.

I've just had Toyo T1-R 's fitted on all 4 corners

SUPERB !
Paul Carugati

Jerome - tramlining is where the steering feels as though it is always wanting to follow the contours of the road - almost as if the wheels were stuck on 'tram lines'

It is a common symptom of a number of problems - and may be caused by incorrect geometry, inappropriately wide tyres of excess wheel offset.

Hope this helps
Rob Bell

Jerome,
would recommend 195/45 R16 front and the 215 rear if you want a good look and economic costing :)

Have a look to the tyre charges for 185 compared with 195. The latter are almost cheaper, cause widely used.
Dieter

Rob,
Thanks for the explanation, that's what I imagined.

Paul,
Thanks for your feedback, I think I will definitely go for those TOYOs (if I buy the car of course!)
What size for your wheels please? Are they the same size all around?

Dieter,
Regarding smaller tyres on front wheels, the problem is I will have to change the front rims :-/
