MG MGF Technical - Fasteners for engine cover.

Hi,
as I have been having a few problems with the car and the RAC's reluctency to remove the engine cover, I have been thinking of fitting some type of quick release catches to the cover. Does any one reccommend any type or is there a reason why it is bolted down? I thought of fitting some of those lock down catches that are used on bonnets ect. Has anyone done this and how was it?

PS I thought that I may use something like the hoods rear fasteners. Does anyone know their correct name?

It is important to ensure a good seal is obtained to prevent any adverse engine fumes entering the cockpit hence the bolts and seal..

Thanks for the reply Geoff, I thought that I would seal the bolt holes with either silicon or rubber and put a soft rubber seal around the edges to combat this. But still need to find the fasteners

The clips on the back of the hood are know as "over-centre clips" or "toggle clamps". Not sure if there is sufficient space to fit them along the front bulkhead though. Personally I find them very fierce like the till in Arkwright's shop and would not fit them anywhere else.

The original screws on the engine cover can become rusty if exposed to steam. The thread can also be stripped if they are grossly over-tightened. So what was the RAC's problem?

I thought this panel was part of the bracing structure.Hence the number of fastenings = n value.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't think about the panel being a bracing structure. RAC only work on the car for I think 1 hour before they tow, but then they have to spend a few hours returning the car. Who know how some, but by no means all as I have had some excellent experiences wiyh them. i will look at the web page Will
thank you.

Looked at the fasteners Will, they may be just what I need, but will also have to think about the structure bracing
